应用文【答案】Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you have studied so hard that you have no time to do any exercise, which led to sickness and-did harm to your learning. It is well-acknowledged that exercise is of benefit to our physical health as well as mental health. Doing sports can build up our bodies, thus helping us stay energetic and fit. Moreover, we may become more contented, confident and determined while working out. To fully enjoy these benefits, here are some tips for you.
First, choose the sport that interests you most and suits you best. Just find a form of physical activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your routine. Second, make preparations such as stretching your body to prevent injuries. Lastly, find some good workout partners. That way, it’s more likely that you’ll exercise regularly.
I would be very pleased to see you have a stronger body.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

Seeing me standing there with money in my hand, Roy felt panicked (恐慌的). I became very angry, asking him if it was the money that we raised last week. He went bright red, admitting that he had stolen it in a low voice. I slowly calmed down and hugged him, telling him that I would be willing to help him overcome his difficulty. He wept and then we had a sincere face-to-face talk. At last, we agreed to return the money.
We went to the head teacher Mrs Smith, together. In the teacher's office, Roy returned the money to Mrs Smith, and guaranteed not to do such things again. Though Mrs Smith was so surprised that she couldn't believe her eyes, she praised him for his courage and told him if he had difficulty with finance she would be ready to help him. Roy was moved to tears. After that, we became good friends again. We trusted each other and shared sorrow and happiness together.石河子市2023-2024学年高一上学期11月月考

One in five teens suffers from mental illness Parents of depressed (忧郁的) teens often think their child is just going through a certain stage, and don’t take the symptoms (症状) seriously. When I was 12 years old, I noticed something was not right with me. I told my mom, but she said I was just going through normal “teenage stuff”. I went on with everyday life, but was not able to function well. I felt depressed and seemed to be crying all the time. I never wanted to come out of my room or be around people. I even pushed people away who meant a lot to me.
I told my mother again what was going with me. Again, she explained away my symptoms by saying my hormones (荷尔蒙) were probably just acting up, but she did agree to take me to the doctor. I knew deep down that whatever was wrong with me was more than just hormones.
Parents need to take their children’s mental health seriously. Brushing it off as nothing will not make it go away. I want parents to understand that 20 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 18 are suffering. Many of these teens feel like their voices won’t be heard if they tell their parents what they are experiencing. Parents and family members need to come together so that teens who suffer can get treatment.
I was very scared to tell my mom about what I was feeling, and it made me feel worse to be told I was just being a teen and that was hormonal. I truly believe that if teens were mere comfortable talking with their parents and telling them personal things, teen suicide and mental breakdowns would decrease. Teens will get treatment, feel more positive, and be able to live a more normal life.

6. What is a proper way for parents to deal with children’s mental illness
A. Treating their symptoms as something normal. B. Taking their children to hospital for treatment.
C. Staying with their children more often. D. Leaving their children alone.
7. What is the purpose of this text
A. To criticize the writer’s mum.
B. To draw public attention to teenage problems
C. To introduce the writer’s suffering of teenage life.
D. To persuade parents to be serious about children’s mental illness.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation(住所). I suggested that they should stay at "bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
"We didn't stay at 'bed and breakfast houses'," they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday."
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought "VACANCIES" meant "holidays", because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said "VACANCIES", which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to the house where the sign said "NO VACANCIES", because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word" DIVERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, the thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that 'Thank you' in French means "No, thank you."
8.My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.
A. driving their car on English roads B. going to England by car
C. finding places to stay in England D. learning English
9.Why did I suggest that they stay at "bed and breakfast houses"
A. Because it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
B. Because It would be convenient for them to have dinner
C. Because they would be able to practice their English.
D. Because there would be no problem in finding accommodation there
10.What does "NO VACANCIES" mean in English according to the passage
A. Free rooms. B. No free rooms. C. Not away on holiday. D. Holidays.
11.When someone offered me more coffee and I said "Thank you in French, I ______.
A. wanted them to take the coffee pot away B. didn't really want any more coffee
C. wanted to express my politeness D. really wanted some more coffee
D
Dry lightning(雷电)can still be harmful even when conditions aren’t so dry, said a study published in Geophysical Research Letters last month. Dry lightning during little to no rainfall was previously thought to cause wildfire danger only with less than 2.5mm of rain in a day. A Washington State University-led study of wildfires in the US West found dry lightning caused wildfires despite up to 7.7 mm of rain.
“The rainfall amounts we recorded should help provide a better understanding of just how much rain can cause a fire risk,” said Dmitri Kalashnikov, lead author of the study.
The researchers analyzed(分析)cases on more than 4,600 naturally caused fires from 2015 to 2020. They matched 3,726 of those to the lightning strikes that likely started them with the help of National Lightning Detection Network.
The study found that 15.3% of those were holdover fires which burn without smoke, bringing about over a hundred fires each year. Analyzing the rainfall amounts around the time of the lightning strikes showed greater rainfall than previously thought among the earlier found fires ranging from 1.7 mm to 4.6 mm.
While humans still cause most fires either by accident or on purpose, lightning-caused wildfires burn the most areas. Nearly 70% of the wildfire-burned land in the West was from lightning-caused fires according to the study. For example, the largest wildfire burn area in California history took place in August 2020 after dry lightning caused many wildfires at once.
Dry lightning can also start wildfires in places that are hard for firefighters to reach. This study found the places where holdover fires happened repeatedly were in the forested mountains of the Southwest as well as the middle and southern Rocky Mountains. Holdover fires cause the problem because they are so hard to notice.
12. The new study found dry lightning can still cause wildfires with a daily rainfall of __________.
A. 7.7 mm B. 8.0mm C. 9.4mm D. 10.2mm
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The finding of the research. B. The number of the cases.
C. The process of the study. D. The designers of the test.
14. Why did holdover fires happen repeatedly in the forested mountains
A. They are difficult to notice. B. The fire service is short-handed.
C. Campers often smoke there. D. The locals fail to call firefighters.
15. From which is the text probably taken
A. A history textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A course plan. D. A book review.

Sound like a list of your homework for the next few nights — or maybe even just for tonight _____16____ and that is your teachers’ way of evaluating (评估) how much you know what’s going on in class. And it helps strengthen important concepts.
_____17_____ It’s attractive to start with the easy things to get them out of the way. However, you’ll have the most energy and focus when you begin, so it’s best to use this mental power on the subjects that are most challenging. Later, when you’re more tired, you can focus on the simpler things. If you get stuck on a problem, try to figure it out as well as you can — but don’t spend too much time on it because this can mess up your homework schedule for the rest of the night. _____18_____ But don’t pick someone whom you’ll be up all night chatting with, or you’ll never get it done!
Most people’s attention spans aren’t very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good idea for most people. _____19_____
Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time. Be sure to put it safely away in your backpack — there’s nothing worse than having a completed assignment that you can’t find the next morning or that gets ruined by a careless brother or sister. _____20_____ Now you’re free to hang out.

B. It sounds very horrible

I remember the first time I met Roy. He was telling a joke. When he reached the final line, everyone burst out laughing. "A popular boy," I thought to myself. My name is Daniel. I was the new boy in the class. There were 33 students in my new class, and most people weren't very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group and we became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters.
Five years later, Roy and I were still in the same class. But just a year ago Roy's father was knocked over by a car. He died a few days later. The family had difficulty with finance. Roy changed completely. He started losing friends, including me.
About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it and found Roy going through the pockets of people's coats. In his hand he had a wallet and I knew it wasn't his. Roy went bright red. "I will put it back right now," he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word. I really hoped that Roy would explain why he had been stealing, but instead he started avoiding me.
Last week, our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity and we made about £500. But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. This morning I decided to ask Roy about the theft so I went to see him. Roy was out. I put his jacket on and put my hands in the pockets. I could feel a lot of notes and I pulled them out. It looked as if there were about £500 there. I was so surprised that I just stood there, holding the notes in my hand. And that moment, Roy walked in.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing me standing there with money in my hand, Roy felt panicked (恐慌的).
