I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures.
4. How did the writer first respond to Paul’s travel plan
A. Scared. B. Puzzled.
C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
5. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2
A. He was a western journalist. B. He had a knowledge of China.
C. He came to China several times. D. He was Joseph Rock’s acquaintance.
6. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul
A. They honored the ancestors. B. They set off in high spirits.
C. They satisfied the locals’ curiosity. D. They built bonds with people.
7. What is the main purpose of the writer’s writing the text
A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
C. To advocate protection of biodiversity. D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.
D 5. B 6. D 7. A

C
My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today’s grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel — grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grand kids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grand kids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves. It’s not just kids gaining from traveling. Who gets the most out of this You might think it’s them but it’s us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grand kids may actually live longer than their peers(同龄人).
It’s also important to recognize that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritizing experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves — some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it’s wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
8. Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad
A. To lead in the trend of skip-gen travel. B. To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C. To stress the importance of family ties. D. To show the growing interest in adventure.
9. Which of the following may Annie Collins agree
A. Many parents are too strict with children.
B. Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel.
C. Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D. Children become mature when away from parents.
10. What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel
A. They enjoy the moment to relax. B. They feel less anxious and stressed.
C. They miss their kids very much. D. They look forward to their own trip.
11. What does the author suggest grandparents do
A. Get kids involved in travel planning. B. Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.
C. Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately. D. Make decisions in both sides’ interests.
A 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据第一段的“My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel(我小的时候,爷爷经常帮我做一个捕鱼的工具,我们会在河边呆上几个小时。那时候对我们俩来说都很美好。如今,越来越多的祖父母有了一种越来越强烈的冒险意识。一种趋势正在兴起:跨代旅行)”可知,作者提到自己小时候与爷爷一起抓鱼的经历是为了引出如今祖父母辈与孙辈之间新的相处模式,即跨代旅游。故选A。
根据第三段的“Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children(事实上,我觉得我和我的孙辈比我和我自己的孩子更平等)”以及“It’s not just kids gaining from traveling.Who gets the most out of this You might think it's them but it's us(这不仅仅是孩子们从旅行中获得的。谁能从中获益最多?你可能认为是他们,但其实是我们)”可以推断出,身为祖母和跨代旅游的实践者,Annie Collins认为祖父母辈从跨代旅游中受益更多。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的“So knowing the kids are in great hands, moms and dads will have a bit of time to themselves- some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries(所以知道孩子们被照顾得很好,父母们就会有一些属于他们自己的时间——一些他们急需的闲暇时间来休息和充电)”可知,当孩子与祖父母外出旅游时,父母也能拥有自己的休闲时间,用来放松和休整。故选A。
根据最后一段的“They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved(他们肯定会珍惜这个与孙辈建立亲密关系的机会,但当只有年轻人可以享受时,明智的做法是说不,因为这趟旅行对参与其中的每个人都应该是一个胜利)”可知,作者认为跨代旅游应该是一件双赢的事,只有对祖父母和孩子都有利时才应进行,由此可知,作者建议祖父母做有利于双方利益的决定。故选D。
D
Paired up in the right setting, dogs and horses can have their fair share of fun—at times even playing together and mimicking each other's facial expressions, new research suggests. These findings, published in the journal Behavioural Processes, mark the first example of so-called rapid facial mimicry occurring between play partners of different species, and indicate the existence of a universal language of play. Though the purpose behind play remains unclear, scientists believe the behavior arises to help animals improve hunting and social skills, relieve stress or develop relationship with each other, study author Elisabetta Palagi says, an animal behaviorist at the University of Pisa in Italy.
Learning more about the contexts in which different animals play around—especially across branches of the tree of life—could tell researchers a lot about play's origins and evolution. But apart from a handful of studies featuring humans and their pets, scientists haven't had many chances to analyze examples of interspecies play.
In 2018, when someone sent Palagi a YouTube video featuring a dog and a horse playing together, she took the chance to research further. The two species, she noted early on, were especially good research objects of interspecies friendship, because they had both been shown to recognize facial expressions in other animals.
Putting together a team of research students, Palagi began to collect and analyze hundreds of other videos with dogs and horses partnering in play. Only 20 videos ended up meeting the team's requirements: showing animals freely playing on their own, without human interference, for at least30 seconds.
Several common themes quickly arose. When playing, dogs and horses often mirrored each other's moves, jumping and pushing at each other. They also rolled on their backs and showed their throats and stomachs—a strong sign that they were at ease and even communicating their friendly intentions. Despite millions of years of evolution between them, the two species had found common ground for the only purpose of fun, said Palagi.
The two animals also frequently copied each other's facial expressions, both using the relaxed, open mouths—behayior that had never been noted between a pair of animals of different species. Horses and dogs may look and behave in extremely different ways, says Barbara Smuts, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Michigan who wasn't involved in the study. But fun is perhaps a language that doesn't need to be taught. Two very dissimilar animals, Smuts says, can still discuss how to play in a way that's comfortable for both.
12. What do scientists find about dogs and horses
A. They share similar facial expressions. B. They can build up a lasting relationship.
C. They often share hunting and social skills. D. They have a special way to communicate.
13. How did Elisabetta Palagi study dogs and horses further
A. By playing with dogs and horses together. B. By pairing up dogs and horses in a setting.
C. By watching videos showing their play scene. D. By recording their play for 30 seconds every day.
14. What does the underlined part "at ease" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean
A. Feeling relaxed. B. Looking similar. C. Getting smart. D. Turning sociable.
15. What is the significance of the study
A. It can help humans get along with animals. B. It studies interspecies play for the first time.
C. It explains animals' way of communicating. D. It analyzes animals' facial expressions in detail
A 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第三段中“In 2018, when someone sent Palagi a YouTube video featuring a dog and a horse playing together, she took the chance to research further.( 2018年,当有人给Palagi发送了一段狗和马一起玩耍YouTube视频时,她抓住机会进行了进一步研究)”可知,Elisabetta Palagi通过观看狗和马玩耍场景的视频进一步研究它们。
根据划线词上文“They also rolled on their backs and showed their throats and stomachs—a strong sign that they were”以及后文“and even communicating their friendly intentions”可知,狗和马会翻身,露出喉咙和肚子——这是它们很放松的一个强烈信号,甚至是在表达它们友好的意图,故划线词意思是“感觉放松”。故选A。
根据最后一段“The two animals also frequently copied each other's facial expressions, both using the relaxed, open mouths—behayior that had never been noted between a pair of animals of different species. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
This year, everything is getting more expensive. This is called inflation. The word inflation comes from inflate, which means “to grow big”. For instance, we inflate balloons. ___16___ When everyone suddenly wants the same thing, it becomes scarce and the price goes up because people will pay more to get it. In fact, inflation has been described as “too much money chasing too few goods”.
___17___ During that time, people all over the world spent little money, because they were forced to stay home. Fuel prices dropped because people weren’t really going anywhere. But now that everything is getting back to normal in many countries, people want to go out and meet friends, get their hair properly cut and generally spend money again. So the demand for goods and services is rising rapidly.
In fact, the world has been hit by a number of drastic problems all coming together, ranging from the pandemic to war to climate change. Oil and gas prices dropped during the pandemic, but now have shot up again. ___18___ Extreme weather events all over the world have made things much worse. For example, droughts in China and California threatened hydropower, while heavy rainfall and flooding in South and Southeast Asia disrupted coal mining in countries like India and China. The cost of coffee increased when Brazil—the world’s largest producer—had a poor harvest after severe drought. ___19___
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that 2023 could be the “darkest hour” for the global economy: “The three largest economies — the United States, China and the Euro area—will continue to stall. The worst is yet to come.” But, to end on a hopeful note, experts say that manufacturing and tourism are gradually rebounding in Malaysia, Thailand and the Pacific island countries. ___20___
A. The Covid-19 pandemic is the main cause.
B. Therefore, we should prepare for “the worst”.
C. So we can hope ”the worst" can be prevented.
D. In the case of money, inflation means the price of things is rising.
E. There is also a shortage of materials like plastic concrete and steel.
F. All of this hits the poor the hardest, and leads to fewer goods being bought.
G. The war in Ukraine has affected the supply of gas to Europe, as this mostly comes from Russia.
D 17. A 18. G 19. F 20. C
根据上文“This year, everything is getting more expensive. This is called inflation. The word inflation comes from inflate, which means “to grow big”. For instance, we inflate balloons.(今年,所有东西都越来越贵了。这被称为通货膨胀。通货膨胀一词来源于inflation,意为“膨胀”。例如,我们给气球充气)”可知,本句承接上文,继续就通货膨胀进行举例说明。故D选项“以货币为例,通货膨胀意味着东西的价格在上涨”符合语境,故选D。
【17题详解】
根据后文“During that time, people all over the world spent little money, because they were forced to stay home. Fuel prices dropped because people weren’t really going anywhere. But now that everything is getting back to normal in many countries, people want to go out and meet friends, get their hair properly cut and generally spend money again. So the demand for goods and services is rising rapidly.(在那段时间里,世界各地的人们几乎不花钱,因为他们被迫呆在家里。燃料价格下降是因为人们没有真正去任何地方。但现在在许多国家,一切都恢复了正常,人们想出去见朋友,理理头发,通常又开始花钱了。因此,对商品和服务的需求正在迅速增长)”可知,本句是在说明导致通货膨胀的第一个原因,后文提到被迫呆在家里,可见是因为疫情。故A选项“Covid-19大流行是主要原因”符合语境,故选A。
【18题详解】
根据上文“In fact, the world has been hit by a number of drastic problems all coming together, ranging from the pandemic to war to climate change. Oil and gas prices dropped during the pandemic, but now have shot up again.(事实上,从大流行到战争再到气候变化,世界受到了一系列严重问题的冲击。石油和天然气价格在大流行期间有所下降,但现在已经再次飙升)”以及后文“Extreme weather events all over the world have made things much worse.(世界各地的极端天气事件使情况变得更糟)”可知,本句与后文并列都是在说明导致石油天然气价格飙升的原因。故G选项“乌克兰战争影响了对欧洲的天然气供应,因为这些天然气主要来自俄罗斯”符合语境,故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上文“For example, droughts in China and California threatened hydropower, while heavy rainfall and flooding in South and Southeast Asia disrupted coal mining in countries like India and China. The cost of coffee increased when Brazil—the world’s largest producer—had a poor harvest after severe drought.(例如,中国和加州的干旱威胁到了水力发电,而南亚和东南亚的强降雨和洪水则扰乱了印度和中国等国的煤矿开采。当世界上最大的咖啡生产国巴西在严重干旱后收成不佳时,咖啡价格上涨)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,应说明上文这些物品价格所带来的影响:所有这些对穷人的打击最大,导致人们购买的商品减少。故F选项“所有这些对穷人的打击最大,导致人们购买的商品减少”符合语境,故选F。

第二节(满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At 76 years old, Melanie felt tired all the time. It had nothing to do with her age, though. 14 years ago, her son, Anthony, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.
Luckily, Melanie had Anthony’s son, Mark, and his wife, Kayla, to get her by. But it wasn’t the same. She missed Anthony and often felt hopeless about life. Her son died at a young age. He left a baby, and Kayla had not recovered from his death either.
One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Melanie and Kayla were suddenly surprised by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Anthony. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Melanie and Kayla both said happily.
“If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的)memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 14 years ago near the Canary Islands. Authorities now have reason to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors…”
When the news ended, Kayla called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Anthony and provided details. Kayla also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 14 years since the accident. The attendant said, “14 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”
This attendant then told Anthony that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Anthony went to the city where Melanie and Kayla lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly, Kayla noticed a familiar face in the crowd.

Back home, Melanie and Kayla tried to restore Anthony’s memory.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, Kayla noticed a familiar face in the crowd. She could hardly contain her excitement. “Anthony!” She screamed, waving joyfully at her long lost husband. Hearing his name called, Anthony immediately hurried to them. Meanwhile, Melanie recognized her son in an instant, who hadn’t changed so much except for some wrinkles on his forehead. “Thank goodness! How nice to have you come back!” She said in a trembling voice and held him tightly, tears blurring her eyes. Confused as Anthony was, he believed they were his beloved family members mentioned by the attendant and agreed to go back home with them.
Back home, Melanie and Kayla tried to restore Anthony’s memory. Every day, they accompanied him to receive the rehabilitation treatment in the hospital. Apart from that, they showed him their former pictures, which they hoped would bring back his memory. One day, as they were browsing the pictures, one of them caught his eyes. It was Anthony and his son, in which they took a trip to their old house. “Mark! It’s Mark!” he yelled. Happy memories of the past flooded into his mind. With great effort, Anthony’s memory was restored.

On September 28 2021, we set out.

When the news ended Kayla called the number immediately.
