It was an early blow to my self-confidence. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc, and I was pleased that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me and asked about my previous accomplishments. I froze. As a PhD student, I had achieved lots to be proud of. But all of those were in my home country of Brazil. Now I was in Washington, D.C. and I didn't know what the word “accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don't know”.
I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would help me secure a teaching position. I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad and got a position in a lab. It all seemed so easy---until I actually started.
In a new country, I struggled. After the embarrassing lab meeting incident, my confidence took another hit. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize. I used to be invited to give talks. Now, I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent. My confidence was destroyed.
After months of self-doubt, I reminded myself that I had potential. I needed to do something to regain my confidence. I thought a change of environment might be what I needed. So I made the move.
In another new lab, I still felt insecure. However, I was determined to make the most of the time I had. There were more opportunities to interact with others, which forced me to talk more. It was awful at first, but with practice I began to feel more confident in my English. I proposed new projects. I began to receive positive feedback on my presentations.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman. She was a strong soldier in her homeland. When she left, she experienced obstacles and failures only to become even stronger than before.
4. What was the author's reaction when asked about her previous achievements
A. She felt insecure. B. She was at a loss.
C. She kept silent. D. She felt proud.
5. Why did the author go abroad
A. To apply for a government fellowship. B. To get a doctor's degree.
C. To build her own lab. D. To gain experience for a position.
6. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. I didn't give a proper response in a lab meeting.
B. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize.
C. I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent.
D. I reminded myself that I had potential.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. A lab incident B. I found my inside Wonder Woman
C. A Brazilian’s confidence D. Poor English ruined my opportunity
C
While many animal populations seem to dwindle, one species that is moving in the opposite direction of such loss is America’s native wildlife---wood stork.
The wood stork is the only stork that breeds in North America. In 1984, it was declared an endangered species after its population decreased sharply to just 5,000 mating pairs. At the time, scientists predicted that the bird would become completely extinct by 2000. Today, it numbers 10,000 mating pairs, and the Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing a delisting of the wood stork as an endangered species. So how did the population bounce back
The success is in part down to the resourcefulness of the wood stork. The wood stork’s native home was in the Everglades in Florida, but it migrated north as the Everglades were being destroyed by development of mankind. Wetland preservation and restoration, protection of nesting areas, and management of water flows began with the approval of the wood stork’s first recovery plan in 1986. In the following year, former Savannah Coastal Refuges biologist John Robinette noticed stork nests in Georgia as stork populations moved to safer wetlands.
According to Stephanie Kurose, a senior policy specialist at the Centre for Biological Diversity, the Endangered Species Act is also to thank for this recovery. She said, “The act saved the wood stork and it helped preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call the area home.” The Endangered Species Act has saved 99 per cent of the species that were on the list since 1973. A hundred types of plants and animals have been delisted as their populations become stable again.
If the wood stork is delisted, it will remain protected by other laws and a monitoring plan will be put in place to ensure the population remains stable.
8. What does the underlined word “dwindle” probably mean
A. Boost. B. Change. C. Decline. D. Explode.
9. What can we learn about the wood stork in paragraph 2
A. Its population shows a rising trend. B. It has become completely extinct.
C. It is widely distributed worldwide. D. It is the most endangered species.
10. What threatened the population of the wood stock
A. Climate change of Earth. B. Popularity of water sports.
C. Impact of human activities. D. Arrival of other wild animals.
11. What is a direct result of the Endangered Species Act
A. People have safer water to drink. B. A list of species have been saved.
C. The local economy has boomed. D. The wood stock has flown away.
D
Many scholars agree that a meaningful existence comes down to three factors: the coherence of one’s life, the possession of clear long-term goals and the belief that one’s life matters. But we believe there is another element to consider.
Imagine the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or the scenery atop a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers us small moments of beauty. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may enhance how they view their life. We call this element experiential appreciation, an ability to detect and admire life’s inner beauty as events happen.
To better understand this appreciation, we conducted a series of studies involving over 3,000 participants. Initially, we had participants rate their coping strategies to relieve their stress. Those managing stress by focusing on their appreciation for life’s beauty reported experiencing life as highly meaningful. In the follow-ups, we asked them to rate the extent to which they agreed with various statements, such as “I have a great appreciation for the beauty of life” and other statements related to coherence, purpose, existential mattering. Our results showed that the more people indicated that they were “appreciating life”, the more they felt their existence valuable. In the subsequent experiment, we further explored the phenomenon by asking participants to watch an awe-inspiring video, they also reported having a greater sense of experiential appreciation and meaning in life in these moments, compared with those watching more neutral videos.
The final results confirmed our original theory: appreciating small things can make life feel more meaningful. But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented lifestyles fill the day with targets. We are on the go, attempting to maximize our output. This makes it easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let life surprise us and embrace the significance every day.
12. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text
A. Existence delivers us large moments of beauty.
B. A meaningful existence involves three factors.
C. Coherence of one’s life is the most important in a meaningful existence.
D. Experiential appreciation means detecting and admiring life’s inner beauty.
13. How does the writer support his viewpoint in paragraph 3
A. By listing scientific statistics.
B. By telling stories.
C. By presenting experimental results.
D. By analyzing causes.
14. What challenges us to feel more meaningful life according to the text
A. Our fast-paced modern lifestyle.
B. The lack of belief in life.
C. Our focus on individual feelings.
D. The ignorance of future outcomes.
15. What is the author’s belief in meaningful life
A. Believing that one’s life matters.
B. Setting a long-term career goal.
C. Valuing what matters to us.
D. Enjoying present beauty of life.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you’re put on the spot, it can feel like a sink-or-swim situation, which can be tense, stressful and pressurizing, especially when you deliver a public speaking. 16
Adjust your use of language
When we feel ourselves to be on a stage, we sometimes use words that are cold, formal, and passive. We do this because we’re anxious and seek to establish authority. Let’s say you’re a doctor, and you’re standing in front of a group of your peers. You might find yourself making statements like, “It is significant that doctors help solve this problem.” 17 When you say, “We must solve this problem,” you are speaking more simply and persuasively. The word “we” is more easygoing. When you use language like this, you get closer to actually solving the problem simply by directly pointing out that it is all of yours to solve.
Pose more questions
Questions are two-way interactions. 18 No longer are you alone “onstage” in front of your audience --- you’re engaging in a dialogue. Even when you’re making a statement, you can think of it as an answer to an unasked question. That in itself can give the encounter a conversational feel and lower the pressure you might experience. The technique makes the presentations more connected and conversational, allowing you to feel more relaxed. Just ask questions the audience might have and answering them.
Beware of the memorisation trap
19 But memorisation also can come back to haunt us. Giving our communication the feel of a formal, over-rehearsed presentation, it can make us nervous as we struggle to remember a great deal that we’d thought of in advance of the actual conversation. Instead of rushing to memorise, try writing out what you’d like to say and then turning that into a short, bullet-pointed outline. Doing so allows you to think through the material in detail while giving you a brief structure that’s easier to keep in mind. 20
A. You will become more connected with your peers.
B. Writing down what we might want to say can help.
C. You and others around you enter into a back-and-forth.
D. Here are three ways that you can improve your delivery.
E. Conversations are more casual and familiar than performances.
F. Language like this creates distance between yourself and others.
G. Using that structure, you can more confidently fill in the gaps as you go.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bob and I hung out the whole summer, running in the field, swimming in the lake and exploring everywhere joyfully.
It was a typical summer afternoon. Bob suggested we skip a language lesson to play basketball. And I would show my defense, lay-ups and three-point shooting. I loved to explore, I loved sports, and I loved basketball most. I believed I would be the next LeBron James.
But my passion for sports came to a sudden stop when I began experiencing extreme back pain later that day. After several visits to doctors, finally I was told that a spine(脊桂) surgery was necessary. Unfortunately, the surgery accidentally damaged my spinal cord(脊髓). I was in the ward hanging face down to relieve the pressure on my spine.
After four-month rehabilitation training(康复训练) in hospital, reality slowly set in---I was unable to walk again. I couldn't believe this should have happened to me, that it wasn't possible to recover, that I wouldn't become a famous basketball player, that my life as I had known it, was over. My future would be chained to a wheelchair. I was just 16 years old!
Back home, I learned how hard it was going to be to get around in a wheelchair. I withdrew from my friends and my basketball. At Bob’s repeated invitation, I agreed to go to our regular swimming hole. Unable to make it down the riverbank alone, I was too proud to ask for help. When I finally realized my pride would keep me away from people and sports I loved, I let Bob carry me on his back to the river's edge.
Allowing others to help was a turning point. I realized my attitude was the biggest barrier I had to face. How could I expect others to see my potential if I didn't see it myself How could I realize my basketball dream if I withdrew into myself
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, Bob took me to a wheelchair basketball game._

第五部分读后续写(满分25分)参考范文:
One day, Bob took me to a wheelchair basketball game. We watched the players weave their way and make impressive shots. They were fiercely competitive and moved around the court with credible speed and precision, using wheelchairs to their full advantage. How I wished I could be one of them! Seeing the spark of excitement in my eyes, Bob whispered, “You can do it if you try.” I hesitated, “You mean it ” He nudged me and smiled, “It doesn't hurt to give it a shot!” (75 words)
With Bob's encouragement, I decided to have a try at my dream. Initially, it was a struggle. Getting around in a wheelchair was challenging itself, let alone defending or shooting. Luckily, I was introduced to some of the wheelchair players, who shared some tricks and encouraged me to carry on. Bob was always keeping me company during all the practices. The more I practiced, the more potential I saw in myself. I was back on court with Bob, pursuing my dream in a different way. (75 words)
