Snowboarding genius Su Yiming made a name for himself by winning China’s first Olympic gold in the sport
on Tuesday. By cleanly stomping back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landed the biggest prize so far in his
young career—gold in the men’s Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The notable achievement realized a
childhood dream to reach the peak of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.
Now with two shinning medals hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut(首
秀) as an unbelievable experience that has made all his sacrifices worthwhile. “This feels so surreal that I’ve finally
accomplished what I’ve dreamed of since I was little,” said an emotional Su.
Over the past four years, Su has combined his talent with hard work to produce one of the swiftest rises to
prominence the sport has ever seen. When the Shougang Big Air venue hosted its first international event, Su was
an unknown qualifier, who didn’t even make the final runs. Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone’s
lips at the venue’s Olympic debut—drawing the whole nation’s attention to the sport he loves.
“The biggest motivation(动力)for me is my love for snowboarding,” Su said, when asked about the secret to
his success. “In snowboarding, I feel like I can show my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it’s
always a joyful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the
sport.”
Su, a former child actor who featured in action movies, said the Olympic gold will encourage him to seek for
more breakthroughs—even beyond his athletic career. “I enjoy snowboarding just as much as I enjoy acting,” said
Su, who turns 18 on Friday. “I think I still have a lot of possibilities to explore in my future career either in
snowboarding or in acting. But now I just want to enjoy the moment and celebrate it as the best possible birthday
gift.”

Mark Bertram lost the tips of two fingers at work in 2018 when his hand became trapped in a fan belt. “It's
life-changing but it’s not life-ending,” he says. “Doing work is harder now. Everything is just a little different.”
After two surgeries and occupational therapy, Bertram decided to make light of his condition by asking Eric
Catalano, a tattoo(纹身 )artist, to create fingernail(手指 甲 ) tattoos. The idea made everyone in the studio
laugh―until they saw the final result. “The mood changed,” Catalano recalls from his Eternal Ink Tattoo Studio in
Hecker, Illinois. “Everything turned from ridiculous to wow.”
When Catalano posted a photo of the tattoos, a pair of fingernails looking so real that no one could believe
their eyes, he had no idea the image would eventually be viewed by millions of people around the world.
The photo pushed Catalano, 40, further into the world of paramedical tattooing. Now people with life-altering
scars come from as far away as Ireland to visit his shop. Using flesh-toned inks and a needle, Catalano transforms
his clients’ view of themselves.
Leslie Pollan, 32, a dog breeder in Oxford, Mississippi, was bitten on the face by a puppy in 2014. After
undergoing countless surgeries to correct a scar on her lip but in vain, she ultimately turned to Catalano, who
covered her lip scar, giving her back a piece of her confidence. Pollan says, “It made me have a different outlook on
life.”
“Every time I see that emotion from my customers, I’m 100 percent sure this is something that I can't stop
doing.”
24. At first, what did people think of the idea of creating the first fingernail tattoos

A. To warn people to stay away from puppies.
B. To prove that plastic surgeries are not so effective.
C. To show Catalano helps change clients’ view of themselves.
D. To highlight that tattooing is very important in our daily life.
27. Which one is the best title of the passage
A. Magical Tattoos B. A Tattoo Artist

Walking over water might sound unbelievable. In fact, people do it all the time. How Almost all of the
world’s liquid fresh water that is called groundwater lies underground.
Earth is a water planet, but most of its water is in the oceans. Only about 2.5 percent of the planet’s water is
fresh water, of which nearly 69 percent is frozen in glaciers(冰 川 ) and ice caps and about 30 percent is
groundwater―much more than the 1.2 percent that flows through rivers and fills lakes.
Groundwater is found almost everywhere on Earth. It hides under mountains, plains and even deserts. Tiny
gaps between rocks and soil grains take in and hold this water like a sponge(海绵), forming buried bodies of water
called aquifers(地下蓄水层 ). Together, they hold about 60 times as much water as the world’s lakes and rivers
4
{#{QQABQQSUggAoABIAARhCAQmICkGQkBECAAoGQFAAoAAAgBNABAA=}#}
combined. Groundwater is a key part of the earth’s water cycle. Rain and melted snow go down into the ground.
The water can stay there for thousands of years. Some groundwater naturally runs out onto the earth’s surface
through springs. It also flows into lakes, rivers and wetlands. People get groundwater through wells for drinking,
watering crops and other uses.
As human-caused climate change dries out parts of the planet, demand for groundwater may rise. At the same
time, climate change may increase storms. Heavier rain is more likely to rush straight into streams and storm drains,
instead of going into the soil. So, there may be less groundwater around.
Many of the world’s aquifers already seem to be drying up. Twenty-one of the earth’s 37 biggest aquifers are
becoming smaller, satellite data show. The most dried-out aquifers are near big cities, farms, or dry regions. As
groundwater stores dwindle, they hold less water to refill rivers and streams, thus threatening freshwater
ecosystems.
32. Which of the following make(s) up the largest part of fresh water
A. Underground water. B. Glaciers and ice caps. C. Oceans. D. Rivers and lakes.
33. What can we know about groundwater from Paragraph 3
A. It will end up in rivers and seas.
B. It’s mainly stored in wet regions.
C. It’s mainly kept in the form of aquifers.
D. It runs out onto the earth’s surface regularly.
34. Why does climate change result in less groundwater according to the text
A. It makes heavier rain go into the soil.
B. It raises the temperature and increases daytime.
C. It causes glaciers to disappear faster than ever.
D. It allows less rain to go underground directly.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The earth is a water planet.
B. Water is in crisis on the planet.
C. The groundwater is decreasing.
D. The climate change is threatening the earth.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In your life, sometimes you may be asked to speak in front of a large group of people. Although it sounds a
little scary, even those with stage fright can speak successfully to the group with adequate preparation.
Practice your speech before the big day. 36 If possible, practice the speech in front of a friend or family
member to get used to saying it to real people. If you feel you must have note cards, limit the amount to about three
cards. This will force you to keep your speech concise and help you keep your eyes focused on your audience.
Remember why you’ve been invited to speak. If you’re battling fear over speaking to a large group of
people, keep your mind on the fact that you were selected for this important role. The speech organizers must have
seen something valuable in you or your expertise. 37
Remember that fear of public speaking is very common. 38 Most of the people in the audience
would be feeling the same fear and stress that you do in your position. Knowing this may make you feel better.
39 What you say should be tailored to why you’re there and who you’re speaking to in order to avoid
sounding general. If speaking to a charity group, mention the good work certain specific individuals have done for
the cause. If speaking at a business conference, briefly state why you want to help these people.
Keep eye contact with the crowd. 40 Pick one person in each section and look at him while you’re
speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another section. When you focus only on
5

one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn’t as frightening.
A.A good memory is really helpful.
B.Show appreciation to your audience.
C.Mention your audience in your speech.
D.The more you have it memorized, the better.
E.In fact, it’s normal to feel nervous or stressed out before a big speech.
F.Separate the crowd into three sections mentally as you get up to speak.
G.The knowledge of other people’s respect for you should reduce some of the fear.

笫二节 读后续写(满分 25分)
Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the
seaside stood thick and tall palm trees(椰子树) with green coconuts(椰子) hanging from them. When the coconuts
fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. It was always great fun to spend the holidays
at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any
7
{#{QQABQQSUggAoABIAARhCAQmICkGQkBECAAoGQFAAoAAAgBNABAA=}#}
trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any
greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his
courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. They were tall
and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in
bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung
to (抓紧) his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake!” They ran outside the house.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting,
screaming and crying, “The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched with
fear.
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house
again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come
too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

Arts Center, with the aim of enriching students’ extracurricular life and promoting excellent
traditional Chinese culture.
With a special theme for each day, the Cultural Week had various forms, such as an ancient
poetry recitation, a paper-cutting show, a calligraphy competition, a Chinese painting display and
a folk music performance. Besides, an essay competition was held, where the students shared their
own ideas and stories about the traditional culture.
Not only did this Cultural Week enhance students’ sense of national identity and pride alike,
it also strengthened their cultural confidence in spreading Chinese culture and telling Chinese
stories in the future.
【答案】Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought
the waves and tried to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away! Sami struggled to keep his
head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught Petu in Grandpa’s
courtyard. He climbed up it and saw his Grandpa struggling near Betu in the violent water. He
screamed out to Grandpa to encourage him to approach Betu, but the water was so wild that it was
difficult for the old man to reach Betu. An idea occurred to Sami. He quickly broke off a branch of
Petu and stuck it to Grandpa. With the help of the branch, he pulled Grandpa up the tree.
Now they were up in Petu. Another wave came with terrifying speed and force, but they were
safe thanks to the tree. They hugged each other, tears welling up in their eyes. They stayed there
comforting each other, waiting the disaster to go away. After what seemed a long time, it was
calm. Both Grandpa and Sami came down the tree and they hugged the tree with tears of gratitude.
But for Petu, there would not be alive now. They knew Petu and Betu were part of their life.

W: It’s about paintings by new artists from around the world using classical styles and techniques.
M: Sounds interesting. When is it
W: It starts in a week but will be open for a month. They said it’ll move to New Bridge Dock 2
months later, so it won’t be bad if we don’t manage to make it.
M: Sounds good. And they’ve normally got deals on for students.
W: Yeah. I remember getting into a show there for $5 that was supposed to be $10.
M: Pass me the poster … it says it’s free if you’re a native and bring your student ID.
W: Great!

internationally. At the moment, I’m just based in Seattle.
W: I see. But what makes you suitable for this job
M: I’ve been very successful so far in sales and I think I can offer a good service to your
customers.
W: Interesting point. What is good customer service in your view
M: The most important skill is the ability to listen to what customers have to say.

M: I suppose I’m not very good at making sure all the paperwork in sales is completed quickly.
You know, I prefer to be out there, going on to the next customer. But of course, I know it has
to be done. I’m trying to improve.
W: OK. Now, what are your salary requirements For this sales position, I mean.

M: St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most globally celebrated Saints days. Across the world, there are
green festivities on March 17th, as far and wide as Japan, Argentina and Russia. St. Patrick’s
Day is widely celebrated for a number of reasons. The most important is Irish people move
around the world. There are nearly 70 million people on Earth with Irish blood. Irish people
moving around the world has been part of Irish history since at least the Middle Ages. But

the traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade. Today, parades are held in many different countries.
But there’s another secret to the success of St. Patrick’s Day, Irish pubs. There are about 8,500
