Sitting close with your little ones from an early age and enjoying a book together is always a great way to spend time, but do you know reading to your children has a whole range of benefits that will give them a flying start in life
Firstly, it's a great introduction to vocabulary. Seeing an adult sounding out the words and linking them to the shapes on the page begins to build up vocabulary that they will use for the rest of their life.
Then there are a variety of good effects of hearing stories which improve their minds and develop social awareness and skills. At a time when they are perhaps stuck indoors more than ever before, reading is the best way to motivate (激发) children's imagination. They can travel to the moon, meet the Gruffalo and pop into a chocolate factory all before they've even had lunch!
There's no better way to walk a mile in someone else's shoes than reading their stories and seeing things from another's point of view is a great way to build empathy (共鸣), tolerance and other qualities needed. There are some fantastic children's books which show characters acting as strong role models. These stories can encourage future leaders and thinkers, so every child can feel they can achieve their dreams, from the Little Leaders series to Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (叛逆女孩).
Now is the perfect time to build up a library of excellent reads ready for children to enjoy now and in the future. They will create memories to last a lifetime. On top of the benefits for your little ones, it's fun, relaxing and a great chance to go back and reread the best books from your own childhood.

Dry lightning(雷电)can still be harmful even when conditions aren't so dry, said a study published in Geophysical Research Letters last month. Dry lightning during little to no rainfall was previously thought to cause wildfire danger only with less than 2.5mm of rain in a day. A Washington State University-led study of wildfires in the US West found dry lightning caused wildfires despite up to 7.7 mm of rain.
"The rainfall amounts we recorded should help provide a better understanding of just how much rain can cause a fire risk," said Dmitri Kalashnikov, lead author of the study.
The researchers analyzed(分析)cases on more than 4,600 naturally caused fires from 2015 to 2020. They matched 3,726 of those to the lightning strikes that likely started them with the help of National Lightning Detection Network.
The study found that 15.3% of those were holdover fires which burn without smoke, bringing about over a hundred fires each year. Analyzing the rainfall amounts around the time of the lightning strikes showed greater rainfall than previously thought among the earlier found fires ranging from 1.7 mm to 4.6 mm.
While humans still cause most fires either by accident or on purpose, lightning-caused wildfires burn the most areas. Nearly 70% of the wildfire-burned land in the West was from lightning-caused fires according to the study. For example, the largest wildfire burn area in California history took place in August 2020 after dry lightning caused many wildfires at once.
Dry lightning can also start wildfires in places that are hard for firefighters to reach. This study found the places where holdover fires happened repeatedly were in the forested mountains of the Southwest as well as the middle and southern Rocky Mountains. Holdover fires cause the problem because they are so hard to notice.
28. The new study found dry lightning can still cause wildfires with a daily rainfall of __________.
A. 7.7 mm B. 8.0mm C. 9.4mm D. 10.2mm
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The finding of the research. B. The number of the cases.
C. The process of the study. D. The designers of the test.
30. Why did holdover fires happen repeatedly in the forested mountains
A. They are difficult to notice. B. The fire service is short-handed.
C. Campers often smoke there. D. The locals fail to call firefighters.
31. From which is the text probably taken
A. A history textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A course plan. D. A book review.
D
2500 years ago, Socrates (苏格拉底) complained that writing would harm students.
Today a different heated debate is ongoing about the dangers of another technology —computers — and the typing people do on them. As primary-school pupils and PhD hopefuls return for a new school year in the northern hemisphere, many will do so with a greater-than-ever reliance on computers to take notes and write papers. Some parents of younger students are frustrated that their children are not just encouraged but required to carry laptops to class. Lot s of teachers complain of uncontrolled distraction in classrooms, with students reading and messaging instead of listening to lectures.
A line of research shows the benefits of an "innovation" prior to computers: hand-writing. Studies have found that writing on paper can improve everything from recalling a random series of words to facilitating a better conceptual grasp of complicated ideas. For learning material by rote, from the shapes of letters to the quirks of English spelling, the benefits of using a pen or pencil lie in how the motor and sensory memory of putting words on paper reinforces that material. The arrangement of squiggles (不规则的曲线) on a page feeds into visual memory: people might remember a word they wrote down in French class as being at the bottom-left on a page, for example.
Another one of the best-demonstrated advantages of writing by hand seems to be in superior note-taking. In a study from 2014 by Pam Mueller and Danny Oppenheimer, students typing wrote down almost twice as many words and more passages word for word from lectures, suggesting they were not understanding so much as rapidly copying the material. Hand-writing, which takes longer for nearly all university-level students, forces note-takers to synthesize ideas into their own words. This aids conceptual understanding at the moment of writing. Besides, those taking notes by hand also perform better on tests when students are later able to study from their notes.
Socrates may or may not have had a point about the downsides of writing. But no one would remember, or much less care, if his student Plato had not noted his teachings down for the benefit of later generations.
32. Why do teachers complain
A. Because students carry laptops to class.
B. Because students cause distraction in class.
C. Because students are not focused in class.
D. Because students are suffering from sight loss.
33. How does hand-writing benefit students
A. It makes students understand concepts better.
B. It helps students develop better imagination.
C. It improves students' writing ability.
D. It saves students' note-taking time.
34. What is the author's attitude to hand-writing
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. In an age of typing handwriting still matters
B. Handwriting helps students
C. Handwriting has big advantages over typing
D. Making the handwriting

A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said: "Puppies For Sale."
Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner, "How much are you going to sell the puppies for " he asked. The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50." The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. "I have $2.37," he said. "Can I please look at them "
The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging(走得慢) considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging puppy and said, "What's wrong with that little dog "
The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn't have a hip socket. It would always be lame(瘸的). The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy that I want to buy." The shop owner said, "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for." The shop owner said, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."

第四部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Allen,
In your e-mail, you expressed disagreement about our teachers speaking both English and Chinese in English classes. I'm writing to give you some explanations.
Undoubtedly, lessons taught only in English provide students with a good English-learning environment, which enables them to learn more quickly and efficiently. However, this method only works for students with a high level of English proficiency. For students with poor English grades, this method may make it difficult for them to follow the teachers. Consequently, they will lose interest in learning English. In this sense, the bilingual teaching method is more effective.
Personally, whichever teaching method is adopted depends largely on the students. We should focus more on learning outcomes of the teaching rather than the teaching forms.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
"Well, I don't walk so well myself." said the little boy. He reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, "The little puppy will need someone who understands!" The manager was compassionate. He insisted that he take the puppy free of cost. But the boy did not agree. He strongly argued, "The lame puppy is not worthless. We will pay for it the same price which you charge for the healthy ones." Finally, the shop owner compromised and instructed the boy how to take good care of the little puppy.
The little boy took the little lame dog home happily. Ever since, they played together; they ate together; sometimes they even slept together. The little lame boy and the little lame puppy became best friends. Naturally, everybody deserves to be recognized, respected and loved. Every person has his own value and should never be judged by his outward appearance. Persons with disabilities need our special care, attention, consideration and encouragement. With our sincere support, they can achieve wonderful things in life and become an inspiration to all.
