Last December,I was invited to a party in a company that provides roofing services. I'd never been there before, and I had it in my head that I'd walk in and see men with a smell of metal, asphalt shingles(沥青瓦)and truck oil in the air. But the image I created in my head was far from the truth.
As I walked up to the main entrance of Universal Roofing in Indianapolis, I was greeted by a lovely lady.We didn't know each other, but she was so welcoming and led me straight to the Grilliant Foods barbeque buffet.
I soon filled my plate and headed for a table populated with people I didn't know. After several bites, started meeting my fellow table mates: a mix of a retired employee, a customer, and a partner, all of whom were talking about how long they had known Rob, who was the owner of the company, and the pleasant experiences of working with him. I personally was most impressed with the retired employee at the table. He was back and enjoying himself simply because he missed the people.
After lunch I started to walk through the hal1. I was impressed with how nicely decorated everything was. From the choice of colors on the walls, the furniture, and flooring, there was love put into the decoration.

Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.
Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn't let dirty smoke go into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight against pollution.

If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a "lesson" in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations. It's now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan. More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People's Daily.

However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.
According to Xinhua News Agency, it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste, In the past. Some previous garbage regulations didn't give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage. "It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting." Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. He also added "the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone.
Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.

One sunny day in summer, two girls named Gracy and Emma were walking to their homes after school. They were talking about the special celebration activities that were going to take place the next day at their school. They both needed something new to wear for the activity, but they had failed to save enough money to buy anything for that purpose. Both their parents had given them only little money to buy something nice for the celebration the next day. But it surely wasn’t enough for them.
Once again they came by that store near their school and looked at the dress they wanted to buy, and Gracy suddenly saw a wallet near her feet just outside the clothing store. She picked it up and found a bit of money inside it. She turned to Emma and shouted exitedly, “Look, I found a little money in this wallet and I will use it to buy the dress I want! What a lucky day!” Emma took the wallet, opened it and found a name and an address in it.
“It is not a good habit to keep whatever we find, Gracy. Put the money back. There is a name and an address in the wallet. I think it won’t be difficult for us to find its owner. We are going to return it,” said Emma.
Gracy was disappointed and said angrily, “No way! I am not putting it back. I just can’t find the owner anyway. I can buy the dress in the store with the money.”
Emma then forced Gracy to come with her to the address and they arrived at a house. Together, the two of them came up to the door and rang the doorbell.

读后续写参考答案:
1.One possible version:
An elderly man came to answer the door. When he saw the wallet that Emma brought back, he thanked Emma again and again. He told the two girls that the wallet belonged to his father, who had passed away several months before. And then, he offered Emma and Gracy some money as a reward and insisted that they take it. Emma strongly denied it, but the elderly man insisted that they accept it, saying that his father had always been a warm-hearted and generous person, and that helping other people would surely make him happy. Hearing his touching story, Emma had no choice but to take the money.
Then Emma and Gracy went back to the store. With the money from the elderly man, Emma bought the dresses in the store, which she and Gracy had both desired. Emma handed the dress to Gracy, saying “Remember! Honesty is the best policy and we should always be honest with everyone.” Gracy nodded, with tears in her eyes.
