Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly - in, fly - out” parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
4. What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
5. What is the author’s attitude to her two friends’ practices
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Hesitant. D. Unconcerned.
6. Who are probably the target readers of this passage
A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Researchers. D. Educators.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Teens want potted plant parents
B. Your kids still need conversation
C. Quiet families raise healthier teenagers
D. Parents know little about today’s teenagers
C
Hazel Mayfield usually cooks the Thanksgiving meal for her extended family in Houston, Texas. She usually welcomes friends and neighbors eager to sample her fried turkey, green bean casserole , candied yams, homemade cornbread dressing, and dirty rice -just a few of her signature dishes. Known as Suga Mama, because her grandchildren think she’s so sweet, the 91 -year-old typically likes to do her own shopping for the ingredients to make her special dishes.
“My mother is the head cook of the family,” said Paulette Mouton, Mayfield’s daughter.“Because of her reputation, you know, there’re people in and out all day, everybody’s family comes through. They want to get some of Suga Mama’s cooking. We’re from Louisiana and we cook all that.”( One in six Americans could go hungry in 2020 as pandemic persists. )
But Mayfield hasn’t been to the grocery store since March. And there is little about Thanksgiving 2020 that’s usual. Hundreds of thousands of American families have re-imagined the holiday with virtual celebrations, canceled or delayed travel plans , or for small gatherings with people in their households in response to COVID-19, the deadly virus that has killed more than 250,000 in the U.S. and spoiled life around the world.
This year, Mayfield’s family members are lamenting( 悲叹) the absence of a big gathering. They’ve explained to their young children and grandchildren why this year’s Thanksgiving is different. Mayfield’ s youngest daughter, Michelle Sanders, says it’s tough helping her grandchildren understand why they can’ t see some of their other family members.
“It’s really hard, trying to explain to them,”Sanders said. “When you’ re talking to them and they want to come over, you have to tell them no. They really don’t know how to be careful.”
Sanders added,“And, they don’ t understand that, being three, four, and six, you know they don’t really understand that. So, it’s ... it’s really, really hard, and heartbreaking. ”
8. What kind of person is Hazel Mayfield
A. Helpful and kind-hearted. B. Stubborn and enthusiastic.
C. Talented and instructive. D. Grateful and sensitive.
9. Why are there people in and out of Hazel Mayfield’s house
A. They like to talk to Suga Mama warmly.
B. They come to help cook meals as they like.
C. They come to satisfy their stomaches.
D. They come to cook various meals.
10. How do people react to this year’s Thanksgiving
A. They try to get together with their family members in the open.
B. They have to avoid big gatherings even with family members.
C. They feel difficult to persuade their children to get together.
D. They are pleased with the absence of Thankgiving celebration.
11. What can we infer from Sanders’words
A. Children are delighted to celebrate their Thanksgiving Day.
B. Adults feel it difficult to get together with their children.
C. Children are still too young to understand the situation.
D. It’s tough helping children overcome their problems.
D
Scientists have been trying to figure out how to alter the genes of humans for many years, and it looks like they’ve finally cracked (破解) the code. But while this may seem like a great step forward in science, some also believe that it’s one step back when it comes to ethics In August, a group of scientists from the USA and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo (胚胎) and remove a genetic mutation (突变) that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian. This was done with the help of CRISPR, a gene-editing tool that allows scientists to “cut and paste” human DNA.
Although this was the first example of an embryo’s genes being changed successfully, the advantages of gene editing have already been tested in living patients. In 2015, a five-month-old girl from the UK was saved after doctors used edited cells to fight off her cancer. As of today, she’s alive and well. And in the USA last year, scientists managed to remove HIV cells from several patients by editing the genes inside their bodies.
Some people hope that in the future, diseases or birth defects could simply be "edited out”. However, others believe this could lead to so-called designer babies, giving parents the option to choose everything from eye color to intelligence. “You could find wealthy parents buying the latest “upgrades” for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Camovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.
In spite of these ethical concerns, experts say it’s not possible to create the “perfect” human being. Despite the progress scientists have made, we don’t understand human genes enough to give all unborn children great brainpower or amazing singing abilities. “Right now, we know nothing about genetic enhancement,” Hank Greely, a director at Stanford University, USA, told The New York Times. “We’re never going to be able to say, honestly, this embryo looks like it would score high on the two-part SAT.”
So it looks like if we want good exam results, or to impress people with our piano skills, we’ll have to stick with the old fashioned method of plain hard work---at least for now.
12. The underlined word “alter” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. record B. change C. remove D. increase
13. What was the first successful example of human embryo gene editing
A. A genetic mutation related to heart disease was removed by scientists.
B. A newborn baby with cancer was saved by edited cells.
C. HIV cells were removed from patients9 bodies.
D. Some birth defects were simply edited out.
14. Why do some people consider human gene editing a step backwards
A. They don’t think it is an effective way to fight diseases.
B. They are concerned that it could lead to genetic mutations.
C. They think it could lead to designer babies and increased inequality.
D. They worry that it could make parents abandon children with birth defects.
15. What can we conclude from the text
A Gene editing is regarded as the perfect way to treat birth defects.
B. There is still a long way to go to fully understand human genes.
C. Gene editing could help enhance human intelligence in the near future.
D. Scientists are pessimistic (悲观的) about the future of gene editing.

Der Lun followed his mother to the market as usual. It was a task he enjoyed because the market was such a place full of life. There was always something interesting to see.
That day, Der Lun caught sight of a middle-aged man with dirty hair and old clothes. He was a beggar. He held out a wooden bowl and passers-by dropped in coins. Der Lun’s mother put a small coin into the bowl as she passed him by. His eyes followed the mother and son as they set off for home. As Der Lun and his mother turned into the narrow path that led to their house, he suddenly realized that the beggar was following them. Der Lun told his mother about it. Alarmed, she quickened her steps and as soon as they got inside their house, she locked it. Der Lun looked out the window and saw the beggar sitting on the ground near the gate. Why did the beggar follow them Der Lun wished he knew.
After a couple of hours, Der Lun’s mother became concerned for the poor beggar. He had not moved from his spot. She gathered up her courage and went to ask the beggar to leave. But the beggar merely looked at her with a gentle smile. Worried that he would fall ill with no food and water, she sent Der Lun to give him a bowl of rice and vegetables and some tea. The beggar ate and drank. Then he lay down under a tree to sleep. Der Lun’s mother was at a loss as to what else to do. She was just a poor widow with a young son. Since the beggar refused to leave, she and Der Lun built a little shelter for him. He seemed content with whatever they gave him.

Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
4. What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.

C. Children are still too young to understand the situation.
D. It’s tough helping children overcome their problems.

A. Gene editing is regarded as the perfect way to treat birth defects.
B. There is still a long way to go to fully understand human genes.
C. Gene editing could help enhance human intelligence in the near future.
D. Scientists are pessimistic (悲观的) about the future of gene editing.
B 13. A 14. C 15. B
根据第一段中“In August, a group of scientists from the USA and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo (胚胎) and remove a genetic mutation (突变) that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian. (据英国《卫报》报道,今年8月,一组来自美国和韩国的科学家合作成功地编辑了一个人类胚胎,并移除了一个可能导致心脏病的基因突变)”可知,科学家可以编辑并改变人类胚胎基因。再根据本段划线句子“Scientists have been trying to figure out how to alter the genes of humans for many years, and it looks like they’ve finally cracked (破解) the code. (科学家们多年来一直试图找出如何alter人类的基因,看来他们终于破解了密码)”可知,科学家一直试图“改变”人类的基因,终于破解了密码,在人类胚胎基因上取得突破,由此可知划线词词义 为“改变”。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“In August, a group of scientists from the USA and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo (胚胎) and remove a genetic mutation (突变) that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian. (尽管这是胚胎基因成功改变的第一个例子,但基因编辑的优势已经在活体患者身上得到了检验)”可知,人类胚胎基因编辑的第一个成功例子是一个与心脏病有关的基因突变被科学家们移除了。故选A。
根据第三段中“However, others believe this could lead to so-called designer babies, giving parents the option to choose everything from eye color to intelligence. “You could find wealthy parents buying the latest “upgrades” for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Camovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.
根据倒数第二段中的“Despite the progress scientists have made, we don’t understand human genes enough to give all unborn children great brainpower or amazing singing abilities. (尽管科学家们已经取得了进步,但我们对人类基因的了解还不足以让所有未出生的孩子拥有强大的智力或惊人的歌唱能力) ”以及最后一段“So it looks like if we want good exam results, or to impress people with our piano skills, we’ll have to stick with the old fashioned method of plain hard work---at least for now.

结合空处前“Many people around the world may know...”及空后“few would know that...”
分析可知,was made句子谓语动词,提示词know“将……称为;把……叫做”是非谓语动词,与其逻辑主语Xuan Prefecture之间是被动关系,用过去分词作后置定语;be known as“作为……而闻名”,故填known。
39题详解】
考查副词。句意:制作宣纸的传统工艺要求极高,需要100多个步骤。修饰形容词demanding用副词extremely,意为“极度,非常”,故填extremely。
【40题详解】
考查不定式。句意:整个过程可能需要长达两年的时间才能完成,而且这些技能已经代代相传。固定句式:It takes + 时间+ to do sth.“做某事花了多少时间”,所以空处填不定式to complete,故填to complete。
结合today可知,时态为一般现在时;本句使用了there be结构,系动词和主语many Xuan paper factories一致,用复数are,故填are。
分析可知,“it has played 10 the culture of Chinese painting”为定语从句,修饰名词role,短语:play a role in“在……起作用”,所以空处用介词in,故填in。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
