With a thirst for a new challenge, I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn't start earlier. Since starting to learn, I have made good progress. The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) is a test of Chinese language for non-native speakers. In July 2020, I passed my HSK3 exam with a score of 100 percent. I am now almost ready to start HSK5.
Learning to speak Chinese isn't as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and worthwhile, particularly writing the characters. The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed. I can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this greatly.
Despite my progress, it has still been the challenge I desire and has taken a lot of hard work. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent The satisfaction that comes from simple things like ordering food in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.
My biggest takeaway from learning Chinese is that it's not only doable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a colorful and beautiful country. Considering where I am now, compared to two years ago, as long as I keep studying hard, I can image a time when I'll be able to read famous Chinese novels not in English but in the original text. So, to all my non-Chinese friends, I always say “Don’t give up. Embrace (拥抱) the challenge.”
4. Which one is the most difficult for the author
A. Writing characters. B. Taking part in HSK exams.
C. Listening to the native speaking. D. Speaking to a taxi driver.
5. What does the underlined word “insurmountable” mean in paragraph 2
A. Easy to upset. B. Possible to change. C. Comfortable to study. D. Hard to overcome.
6. Why does the author think learning Chinese is satisfying
A. It can make the author proud. B. It makes the author know more Chinese.
C. It can be useful in daily life. D. It makes the author more competitive.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Passing exams isn't a piece of cake B. Learning Chinese isn't unbeatable
C. Explore the historical and cultural country D. Deepen understanding of Chinese culture
C
Winter can usually kill most wildfires. But in the far North, some forest fires just don’t die. They are thought of as “zombie (僵尸) fires”.
“Zombie fires” usually sleep underground in winter. Covered by snow, they smoke through the cold. Fueled by carbon-rich peat (泥炭) and soil in the North, most of these hidden fires spread slowly for less than 500 meters during the winter. When spring comes, the flames (火焰) of the fires appear near sites that they have burned in winter, and they turn to burning fresh fuels around. This may happen well before the traditional fire season in the far North.
“Zombie fires” had been known mostly from firefighters’ stories. Few scientists studied them until details in some satellite images attracted one research team. Rebecca Scholten, a member of the team, studies earth systems at Vrije University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Her team noticed an unusual thing. “New fires have been starting very close to the former years’ fires in recent years, and we wonder how often the fires might survive the winter,” Scholten explains.
These “zombie fires” are rarely seen before, according to a new study from Nature. But in recent years, they are becoming more common, the study warns. It is believed that the “zombie fires” are even on the road of being a threat. Forests in the far North are warming faster than the globe’s average. Scholten says, “We’re seeing more hot summers and more large fires and strong burning. That could set the stage for the fires to become a bigger problem,” she worries. And the region’s soils hold a lot of carbon—maybe twice as much as earth’s atmosphere. More fires here could give off huge amounts of greenhouse gases. That would drive a cycle of more warming and even higher risk of fires.
8. What do we know about the “zombies fires” in the far North
A. They will completely die out in winter.
B. Their flames can only appear in spring.
C. Carbon-rich peat helps them burn slowly in winter.
D. They often happen after the traditional fire season.
9 What can we infer from Scholten’s words in paragraph 3
A. “Zombie fires” happen more frequently than before.
B. “Zombie fires” appear earlier than the years before.
C. “Zombie fires” appear in different shapes every year.
D. “Zombie fires” happen far from former years’ fires.
10. What may be a cause of being a threat for the “zombie fires”
A. More greenhouse gases are given off.
B. The area’s soils are short of carbon.
C. The global warming is slowing down.
D. The hot summers are less and less seen.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Will “zombie fires” disappear
B. Pay attention to “zombie fires”!
C. Are “zombie fires” frightening
D. “Zombie fires” are caused by humans!
D
Ask anyone who lives in an apartment in a packed city and they'll likely tell you space is among their biggest problems. Those living in even smaller rooms know the headache all too well. Some even pay money each month for storage as a result just to make more room.
Boston-based company Ori is out to solve those problems with a system that uses robotics and apartment furniture to change small spaces in seconds.
The company's new system is also called Ori, which is named for the Japanese word "origami", the art of folding (折叠) paper. The new system makes your furniture change your small space from a living room into a bedroom and even a workspace with the push of a button (按钮).
Ori came from MIT's Media Lab, which works to help companies to create a better future for people. The company is working with developers Boston Properties, Skanska and Samuels Associates to put the furniture in high-end apartments in Boston. It is working with designer Yves Béhar on the furniture designs.
The Boston models are being rented (租用) on Airbnb, an online company offering people rentals, so Ori can collect information about what users think of the system and improve it in the future. The system will be put on the market in the near future, said Larrea, founder and CEO Hasier Larrea.
All of Ori's product (产品) is made in the US, and Larrea said the furniture is actually more expensive to make than the robotics. Assembly (装配) is simple — the unit can be put together in just a day, Larrea explained. The most difficult thing for this MIT team was making the system feel and look personal.
"We have created these amazing robots with amazing abilities," he said. "But when you bring a system into a home, it can't look like a robot."
12. What is troubling the people mentioned in the first paragraph
A. Storage units in the city are getting smaller.
B. There are too many people living in the city.
C. The cost of living is too high.
D. Their living space is too small.
13. How can the company Ori help a user
A. By helping to keep his house tidy.
B. By using a robot to clean his furniture.
C. By letting his rooms serve different purposes.
D. By making a robot do daily work for him.
14. What do we know about the new system
A. It is now being tested.
B. It has a few disadvantages.
C. It was designed by Yves Béhar.
D. It has just come onto the market.
15. What is the company making an effort to do now
A. Develop better robots.
B. Shorten the assembly time.
C. Cut down on its product's costs.
D. Make its product more human-friendly.

C 5. D 6. C 7. B
根据第二段倒数第二句“The thing I find most challenging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed.(我发现最具挑战的事是听力,因为母语者们语速如此之快)”可知,作者认为学习汉语时最困难的部分是听母语者讲话。
根据划线词所在句以及后两句“Learning to speak Chinese isn't as insurmountable as I once thought. When I speak to native speakers in Chinese, they almost always understand me. I also find it not too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters.(学着说汉语并不像我以前想的那么困难。当我和母语者用汉语交谈时,他们几乎都能理解我。我还发现记忆汉字没那么难,现在我甚至能写超过400个汉字了)”可知,作者在后句中表达的意思是汉语并不是很难学,显然第一句以否定句搭配insurmountable一词就是在表达这一含义,因此其含义为“困难的,无法克服的”。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段最后一句“The satisfaction that comes from simple things like ordering food in Chinese, buying things on the Internet or communicating with a taxi driver makes all the hard work worth it.(一些小事带来的满足感,比如用中文点餐,在网上购物或是和出租车司机交流,让我感到所有的辛苦都是值得的)”可知,正是日常生活中对汉语的使用让作者对学习中文感到满足。

9. What can we infer from Scholten’s words in paragraph 3
A Will “zombie fires” disappear
B. Pay attention to “zombie fires”!
C. Are “zombie fires” frightening
D. “Zombie fires” are caused by humans!
C 9. A 10. A 11. B

根据第三段““New fires have been starting very close to the former years’ fires in recent years, and we wonder how often the fires might survive the winter,” Scholten explains.(“近年来,新的火灾已经开始,非常接近前几年的火灾,我们想知道多少次火灾能熬过冬天,”斯科尔滕解释说。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“More fires here could give off huge amounts of greenhouse gases. That would drive a cycle of more warming and even higher risk of fires. (更多的火灾会释放出大量的温室气体。这将导致更大的气候变暖周期和更高的火灾风险。)”可知,更多的火会释放出大量的温室气体,导致又一轮的气温变暖,以及更大风险的火灾。故选A项。
根据第二段““Zombie fires” usually sleep underground in winter.(僵尸火通常在冬季潜伏)”和最后一段“It is believed that the “zombie fires” are even on the road of being a threat. (人们认为,“僵尸火灾”甚至日益成为一种威胁。)”可知,文章主要介绍了“僵尸火”的由来以及近年来它可能会带来的消极影响。故选B项。

D 13. C 14. A 15. D
