42. Dear Sir or Madam,
Failure is a common thing in one's life, almost everyone experiences failure in his life. As for the topic "Will Failure Eventually Lead to Success ", different people hold different opinions about it.
Some people think that failure will not lead to success. ①They hold the belief that when one fails in his attempt in doing something, he often feels upset. Some people may yield to failure and give up what they are doing, we all know that we face different choices right upon graduation, if some people failed in a field, they would probably switch their career to another direction. That's why people think failure will not contribute to success.
②But others argue that those who suffered failure in their life will stick to and achieve the final success. Success is what everyone expects. It may lead to fame and glory. When one succeeds in doing something, he gets so excited that he often neglects all the unsuccessful attempts he has done. So, with this spirit, Those people who keep trying will succeed sooner or later.
As far as I'm concerned, failure leads to success. It is true that failure is an important factor toward success. The way to success is full of various difficulties and obstacles, many important inventions or discoveries were achieved after hundreds of failures. And only those successes which have been achieved after many failures are really valuable and praiseworthy.

二、阅读理解(本大题共19小题,共45分)
A
Mars may seem like a dry, desolate place, but the red planet transforms into an otherworldly wonderland in winter, according to a new video shared by NASA.
It's late winter in Mars' Northern Hemisphere, where the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are exploring an ancient river delta (三角洲) that once fed into Jezero Crater billions of years ago.
As the planet's main feature, dust drives Martian weather, but the planet is no stranger to snow, ice and frost. There are two types of snow on Mars. One is the kind we experience on Earth made of frozen water. The thin Martian air and sub-zero temperatures means that traditional snow changes from a solid directly to a gas, before touching the ground on Mars.
The other type of Martian snow is carbon dioxide based, or dry ice, and it can land on the surface. A few feet of snow tends to fall on Mars in its flat regions near the poles. "Enough falls that you could snowshoe (穿雪鞋走路) across it." said Sylvain Piqueux, a Mars scientist at NASA'S Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.
So far, no orbiters(轨道飞行器) or rovers have been able to see snow fall on the red planet because the weather phenomenon only occurs at the poles beneath cloud cover at night. The cameras on the orbiters can't peer through the clouds, and no robotic explorers have been developed that could survive the freezing temperatures at the poles, which can be as low as minus 120 degrees Celsius.
However, the Mars Climate Sounder instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter can detect light that's invisible to the human eye. It has made detections of carbon dioxide snow falling at the Martian poles. The Phoenix lander, which arrived on Mars in 2008, also used one of its laser instruments to detect water-ice snow from its spot about 1, 600 kilometers away from the Martian north pole.
Thanks to photographers, we know snowflakes on Earth are unique and six sided. Beneath a microscope, Martian snowflakes would likely look a little different. "Because carbon dioxide ice has a symmetry (对称) of four, we know dry-ice snowflakes would be cube-shaped (立方体的), "Piqueux said. "Thanks to the Mars Climate Sounder, we can tell these snowflakes would be smaller than the width of a human hair."
Ice and carbon dioxide-based frosts also form on Mars, and they can occur farther away from the poles. The Odyssey orbiter (which entered Mars orbit in 2001) has watched frost forming and turning to a gas in the sunlight, while the Viking landers spotted icy frost on Mars when they arrived in the 1970s.
2.What can we learn about the snow made of frozen water on Mars
A. It contains lots of dust.
B. It makes the Martian air thick.
C. It keeps its form stable while falling.
D. It can hardly be seen on the Martian ground.
3.What makes it difficult for robotic explorers to see snow fall on Mars
A. The freezing temperature. B. The thickness of clouds.
C. The changing weather pattern. D. The distance from the poles.
4.What can the Mars Climate Sounder tell us about dry-ice snowflakes?
A. Their smell. B. Their size.
C. Their speed. D. Their direction.
5.What is the best title of the text
A. It Seldom Snows on Mars. B. It Is Much Colder on Mars.
C. The Beautiful Winter on Mars. D. The Seasonal Changes on Mars.

The impact of the man-made climate crisis on Antarctica is scientifically undeniable: stable ice shelves are retreating, air temperature increased by 3 degrees Celsius. Krill (磷虾) numbers are declining, melting ice is contributing to sea level rise, and polar bears and seals are getting displaced. "Antarctic biodiversity could decline substantially by the end of the century if we continue with business as usual." Jasmine Rachael Lee, lead author of the University of Queensland study says.
Published in the journal PLOS Biology, the study finds population declines are likely for 65% of the continent's plants and wildlife by the year 2100. The most vulnerable (脆弱的) species is the Emperor penguins. In October 2022, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed Emperor penguins as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act(ESA), as experts predict the flightless seabird will see a 26% to 47% dip in its population by 2050. "This listing reflects the growing extinction crisis and highlights the importance of the ESA and efforts to conserve species before population declines become irreversible (不可逆转)." said Service Director Martha Williams at the time.
Aside from Emperor penguins, other Antarctic specialists, like the Adélie penguin and dry soil nematodes, were also highly vulnerable. We urgently need a combination of global and local conservation action to best conserve Antarctic species. Global action and global voices to help relieve climate change—because the biggest threat to Antarctica is coming from outside of it. And then we need local actions to help protect biodiversity against local threats and give them the best chance of adapting to climate changes. This will help to save our iconic (代表性的) species like the Emperor penguins and all of Antarctica's unique and highly adapted inhabitants. It will also help humankind, as we rely heavily on the priceless services the Antarctic provides in regulating our climate and capturing sea level in its ice sheets.
6.What can we learn from Paragraph 1
A. The impact of climate crisis is usually denied.
B. Conservation efforts are badly needed.
C. Air temperature on Antarctic increases 3℃ annually.
D. Sea level rise results in seabirds losing their habitats.
7.Why is the Emperor penguin mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To serve as a call to protect wildlife on Antarctic
B. To reflect the growing population of wild species.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act.
D. To highlight the severe impact of rising temperature.
8.What is probably the best conservation policy
A. Reducing the chances of making a trip to Antarctic.
B. Making joint efforts to relieve climate change.
C. Attempting to provide essential nutrients to the ecosystem.
D. Continuing to carry forward the Endangered Species Act.
9.What is the best title for the text
A. Plants and Wildlife on Antarctica Will Decline Quickly
B. Antarctic Species Are Vulnerable to Human Threats
C. More Action Should Be Taken to Protect Wildlife on Antarctica
D. The Best Conservation Strategy Will Be Carried Out Soon

Four beautiful trips combining bikes and trains
Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail (小径)
The trail is an 87-mile pathway from Cleveland to Bolivar in Northeast Ohio. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) stretches out separately along the trail from Akron to Thornburg Station, a 31-mile stretch that passes through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail hugs the outline of the original Ohio and Erie Canal. Today, the trail passes many landmarks, including bridges, museums, and villages.
Danube Cycle Path
It is a path that follows the Danube River for about 745 miles, from Donaueschingen, Germanny to Budapest, Hungary. The path is most popular in Austria featuring 245 scenic miles serviced by local and long-distance trains. Most cyclists choose to ride from west to cast with the flow of the river, to take advantage of the natural slope (斜坡) of bicycle traffic.
Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail
The tail extends for 25 miles through woodlands next to the Lehigh Rive. A historic tourist railway called the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway follows the trail, allowing cyclists to create a one- way ride rather than backtracking. The rail trail is mostly flat and passes through Lehigh Gorge State Park. While the train operates most days, the bike service is only offered one weekend a month from May to November.
Cinder Track
The Cinder Track is a 21-mile broken-stone pathway along the coast of Yorkshire, England: The towns of Scarborough and Whitby, where the trail begins and ends, both have train stations near the trail. The train journey is not a direct pathway between the two towns—in fact, the tracks of the original direct pathway were removed to create the trail. The trail, meanwhile, hugs the Yorkshire coast, with views of seaside bluffs (峭壁), fishing villages, etc.
10.What is special about the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail
A. It offers a chance to visit museums.
B. It goes past many cities and villages.
C. It shares most of its trail with CVSR.
D. It provides cyclists with a view of the sea.
11.What's the disadvantage of the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for cyclists
A. The numerous sharp slope. B. The extremely rough path.
C. The connection with a railway. D. The time limit of bike service.
12.Which of the following covers the longest distance
A. The Cinder Track.
B. The Danube Cycle Path.
C. The Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail.
D. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
D
The trend towards larger cars is obvious in recent years. Electric SUVs (越野车) have also been growing in popularity, representing roughly 35 percent of electric car sales in 2022, according to the latest figures released by the International Energy Agency. But although electrification of the global vehicle brings climate benefits, there is also cause for concern.
Electric SUVs are still greener than the petrol (汽油) ones, but their size and weight removes some of the climate gains. Their larger batteries require more raw minerals (矿物), like cobalt and lithium, putting extra pressure on global supplies. "New policies to encourage people to choose smaller electric vehicles (EV) may be needed, such as increasing taxes for Electric SUVs. We could reduce hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) overtime." says Christian Brand at the University of Oxford.
Air pollution is another worry. In poorer countries like India, electric vehicles will lead to significant improvements in urban air quality. But in richer countries, where petrol cars tend to be cleaner, the situation isn't so clear. "The benefit of moving to an electric vehicle, from a certain point of view, is actually pretty small," says Frank Kelly at Imperial College London. And since electric vehicles still produce pollution from their tires, brakes and road wear, air pollution won't fully go away. "We're still going to have a pretty big problem in our cities," says Kelly.
As such, governments must do more to reduce car dependency, particularly in urban areas. Clean public transport is the solution to our air pollution problem in urban areas. We should be reducing the number of all private vehicles as much as possible, not celebrating the increased figures.
13.What can we learn about the Electric SUVs
A. They greatly improve air quality.
B. They are not as green as expected.
C. They will not become globally popular.
D. They sold better than petrol ones in 2022.
14.What do Kelly's words suggest
A. The trend towards EVs is not clear.
B. Petrol cars produce less air pollution.
C. EVs may not have the desired effects.
D. Petrol cars are cheaper in rich countries.
15.What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. Start an argument and call on action.
B. Express concerns and suggest solutions.
C. Introduce products and attract attention.
D. Compare products and offer suggestions.

There is a festival in China that has three names. It s known as the Chongyang Festival. Also, it is called the Double Ninth Festival because it falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Finally it has been Senior s Day (老人节) since 1989. 三、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共12.5分)
Adaptations are currently popular in the movie industry. We're all familiar with film adaptations of books. (21) Book adaptations of films aren't that common, but it's a medium that certainly takes skills to master.
The most well-known version of a film being adapted to books is via the novelisation (小说化). Movie novelisations went through a boom period before the internet era. Fans wanted to know more about the fictional worlds and experience the story again in a new way. (22) Thus, the novelisation was a greats solution.
Meanwhile, the screen to page process has also opened up the possibility of sequels (续篇). Perhaps there simply wasn't financial investment to create a follow-up to a film. Maybe a sequel idea simply felt more appropriate for a novel. (23) In recent years for example, the film Heat, released in 1995 has received its own novel, ET: The Book of the Green Planet continued the extra terrestrial's journey after the completion of the film's narrative.
But what are the benefits of reading a novel instead of waiting for the big screen version Well, a novel can take its reader deeper into the mind of the characters that the film had to represent in a more visual way. (24) Although a film might characterize a fantastic scene or a specific costume choice, it doesn't always tell why those things are important. Novelisations and sequels can take that extra step and shine a light on some of those movie-making choices. Book adaptations of films obviously won't ever replace cinema, and there's no need to choose one or the other (25)
A.But what about book adaptations of films
B.Besides, descriptions can be more detailed too.
C.For a time, they were everything for cinema lovers.
D.Films being adapted to books has been talked repeatedly.
E.But they couldn't simply google it, or immediately purchase the production on tape.
E.Regardless, some terrific films have been expanded upon thanks to this medium.
G.Actually, these two mediums are considerably interdependent and complementary.
