【原文】 Hi, I’m Melanie and I’m here to present our ideas for an anti-smoking public service video called “Kick it in!” This video forms part of the government’s “Healthy Living” campaign, which aims to promote a more active lifestyle. It is the first in a series of three, the other two being healthy eating and responsible drinking.
As you may know, when the anti-smoking campaign came in a few years ago, the number of smokers went down dramatically. However, since then, recent reports show that these figures have been going up again, particularly among the under 20s. This video is designed to discourage teenagers from taking up the habit.
The video itself follows a few days in the life of an unhealthy teenager and the effects smoking is having on him. This is quite different from the lives of those of his healthier, more active friends. Basically, we want to get across the idea that there’s a cost linked with smoking — a cost in terms of money, friends and your health. OK, has anybody got any questions

Every day as the sun rises, Ma Hongyi, a 66-year-old farmer, can be seen patrolling (巡逻) Yuncheng Salt Lake with his dog in Yuncheng city, North China’s Shanxi province.
Ma still remembers the day when he first saw two big pink birds wandering through the water. “I had never seen such pretty birds. They were even taller than me, with long wings,” Ma recalls. He was later informed that those birds were flamingos, a rare sight in China, which were listed on the International Union for Protection of Nature’s red list of endangered species in 2013. From that day on, Ma started his second career as a volunteer to prevent human beings from doing harm to the wildlife. “The birds are attracted by the good environment,” Ma says. “I will do my best to protect the lake so that birds can come here every year.”
Yuncheng Salt Lake covers an area of 132 square kilometers and used to serve as a salt production base. As the country began attaching greater importance to environmental protection, an ecological (生态的) protection and development center was set up in 2012 to carry out regular ecological protection and restoration of the lake. “The greatest value of the Salt Lake lies in its ecology, which should be properly protected,” says Chu Xianghao, head of the city. The lake area hosts 292 types of wild animals, along with 782 plant varieties, some of which are newly recorded species in the country.
After patrolling the lake as a volunteer for over four years, Ma was employed by the local government to help with wildlife protection in 2019. “The lake’s ecology is getting better,” Ma says, adding that he looks forward to the arrival of the flamingos every year. “Some of them are my old friends,” he says.
24. What event makes Mr Ma to start his second career
A. Seeing a rare scenery in his field.
B. Finding a list of endangered species.
C. Coming across a certain bird unexpectedly.
D. Knowing the way to increas the number of species.

Thousands of runners did up their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons in China are picking up the pace again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old teenager from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2.
For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run. “Compared with the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance (耐力) and psychological quality,” he told Teens. When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the audience also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finishing line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Likewise, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.
28. How is marathon in China according to the text
A. Strange. B. Outdated. C. Popular. D. Indifferent.
29. What do Xu Qian’s words mean
A. Runners’ psychological quality determines their speed.
B. Marathon has positive influence on his body and mind.
C. Speed is the only way to beat opponents during the race.
D. Unlike long-distance running, the 800-meter run tests runners’ endurance.
30. How did Li Zhouzi feel about the support from the audience
A. It gave her confidence in life.
B. It didn’t make a big difference.
C. It made her depressed.
D. It gave her strength to race to the end.
31. What do Xu Qian and Li Zhouzi have in common
A. Their life goals.
B. Their competition age group.
C. Their way of being encouraged.
D. Their character of being fearless of difficulties.

More than a third of the world’s population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Engineers and scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas access clean drinking water.
They developed a low-cost gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest bining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konjac gum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (潮湿), one kilogram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.
Previously, researchers have harvested fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a vast improvement from previous water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be moulded into a shape or size that best suits the user.
“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu, professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people without consistent access to drinking water to have simple, water generating devices at home that they can easily operate.”
“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” the paper’s lead author, Youhong “Nancy” Guo said. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the yield, making this technology a practicable solution to drought.
32. What do we know about the gel film from paragraph 2
A. It can increase the humidity of the air.
B. It can harvest drinking water from the air.
C. It has been widely applied in desert areas.
D. It costs lots of money and energy to produce.
33. Why does the author mention previous water harvesting methods in paragraph 3
A. To prove the advantages of the new gel.
B. To show the tough living conditions in dry regions.
C. To state the process of manufacturing the new gel.
D. To present the theory of water harvesting technologies.
34. What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water harvesting method
A. Indifferent. B. Skeptical.
C. Disapproving. D. Hopeful.
35. What will scientists plan to do next
A. Develop a thicker gel. B. Produce the gel on a large scale.
C. Raise money for further research. D. Teach people to make the gel at home.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. A

In my opinion, skipping meals is harmful to our physical and mental health. If we can’t take in enough nutrition, we will feel weak and get ill easily. What’s worse, we may have trouble concentrating and it will have a negative influence on our study. On the other hand, beauty comes from within. Last April, Jake drove to visit his mother who lived in the countryside. When he went back home, Jake’s mother looked at the dark sky and noticed the sign of a coming storm. Worried about her son’s safety, she told him to drive as carefully as possible on his way home and he promised to give her a call upon his arrival.
With his mother’s words in mind, Jake approached the main road carefully. Soon, it started to rain heavily. Eager to get home, Jake began to drive faster. Two hours later, he came to a rough mountain road that had been flooded by a creek (小溪). Jake, driving a four-wheel truck, figured that he would be OK. At that moment, he didn’t realize that such a thought would be a big mistake.
It was halfway across the creek that an unfortunate incident took place: The rushing waters grabbed hold of his vehicle, pushing it off the road and sending it down a rocky creek bed. The truck finally stopped some 80 feet away. Jake’s problems only grew from there as the water had somehow positioned the truck into the creek bank at a 45-degree angle, making it difficult for him to open the driver’s side door. Injured and trapped inside with the muddy water rising quickly, Jake was certain he was going to die. Shaking with fear, he was at a loss about what to do.
On the road right behind Jake were a delivery worker named Paul and his friend Tom, who were on the way to deliver furniture to customers in the countryside. They witnessed the horrible incident, and when Jake’s truck came to rest in the middle of the overflowing creek, Paul quickly began to take action. First, he grabbed a rope from the back of his vehicle and used it to ensure he could safely approach the truck.

To his relief, it didn’t hurt Jake, who reached out for Paul’s hand and was rescued. Without delay, the two men escaped and returned to safety.
Jake was about to thank Paul and Tom when the mobile phone in his jacket pocket rang. With trembling hands, Jake took out the phone and answered it. “Are you home yet Everything’s good ” His mother’s anxious voice came over.

33 Why does the author mention previous water harvesting methods in paragraph 3
A. To prove the advantages of the new gel.
B To show the tough living conditions in dry regions.

With his mother’s words in mind Jake approached the main road carefully.
