We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. It was a very hot day in late Summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood mill. It was dangerous, back-breaking work that paid very little. In the year I worked there, only four other people hadn’t quit and been replaced with new feces. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
On this day all of us were covered in sweat and dust. When I looked around, every face I saw looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out, “Hey! There’s a deer in here.” A lost little female deer had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now cowering (蜷缩) in between the huge stacks of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about looking for a way out.
Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the Fall but also treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy 50 bags of corn to help feed them during the harsh Winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little creature. By blocking off all the other routes, we were able to guide her frantic search back to the open bay doors. We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face there was a joyful smile. It was as if this one single act of kindness had energized us again and reminded us of what life is all about.
24. Why were few people willing to work in the wood mill
A. They were dissatisfied with the pay and working conditions.
B. They were tired of wood cutting and wanted more freedom.

A. The deer made the workers unable to work.
B. The workers there wanted to kill the deer for meat.
C. It was common for the workers to see a deer there.
D. The deer was a ray of light to the dull workers there.
26. How did the men free the deer in the end
A. They blocked all the routes except the proper ones.
B. They caught her and then sent her to the wide wild.
C They used signals to guide the deer out of the woods.
D. They used foods to guide the deer out to the open doors.

Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends — 532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.
But is it possible that Kaylee’s online friendships could be making her lonely That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.
Could this be true During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words With Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.
Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms (平台).
In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger, “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.
Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual words, we will have little time for our real-world friendships.” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.
28 What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To summarize the text. B. To tell about true friends.
C. To bring up a discussion. D. To encourage online friendship.
29. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3
A. In person. B. In advance. C. In any case. D. In full measure.
30. What is Katie’s attitude towards online communication
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Confused. D. Unconcerned.
31. What view does Rosen hold
A. It’s wise to turn to friends online.
B. It’s easier to develop friendships in reality.
C. Social media help people stay closely connected.
D. Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.
C 29. A 30. B 31. D

Communication skills:What is active listening

Try as much as possible to see things from the speaker's point of view.
Once the speaker finishes talking, you should repeat back the main points of what he or she just said. ___38___.It gives him or her a chance to clear up any misunderstandings. The speaker can explain his or her ideas until he or she feels fully understood.___39___ From there, the two people switch back and forth until they have both fully heard and understood each other.
Active listening is very useful for people who live or work together. Family members and co-workers often have bad listening habits. They react to each other based on what they expect the other person to say rather than on what is actually said. ___40___.

根据后文“the speaker and the listener sit facing each other.(演讲者和听众面对面地坐着。)”和“The two people take turns talking.(两个人轮流谈话。)”可知,空格处是对积极倾听的参与者的描述;且“done by two people on their own(由两个人自己完成)”与上句“be guided by a third person(由第三人引导)”构成选择关系,故C项“或者,它可以由两个人独自完成。”
本空前一句“You should avoid thinking about what to say next or whether what the speaker is saying is right.(你应该避免考虑接下来要说什么,或者说话者所说的是否正确。)”
。且G项“that”可以指代前句“repeat back the main points of what he or she just said.(重复他或她刚说的要点。)”
根据本空后句“From there, the two people switch back and forth until they have both fully heard and understood each other.(从那时起,两个人反复交流,直到他们完全听到并理解了对方。)” The speaker and the listener 呼应 two people 。
符合语境,且F项中的“this pattern”指代本空前一句“They react to each other based on what they expect the other person to say rather than on what is actually said.(他们对对方的反应是基于他们期望对方说什么,而不是实际说了什么。)”。
符合语境,且F项中的“this pattern”指代本空前一句“They react to each other based on what they expect the other person to say rather than on what is actually said.(他们对对方的反应是基于他们期望对方说什么,而不是实际说了什么)”。故选F项。

Hi Worried,
I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. The truth is that everyone will have one of those periods when things seem to be wrong, so you don’t have to worry so much. The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you’ll regret. Here are three useful tips:
First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel. This is a good way of letting your anger out without hurting others or yourself. Second, go outdoors and play team games with your friends, as physical exercise is an effective way to get rid of anger. And third, remain optimistic about your future. Such a positive attitude towards life can be helpful in lifting your spirits.
I hope you’ll soon feel calmer and carry on as normal.
Yours,
Jamie

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their moth- er was very sick and their father was struggling to finda job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for sever al months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe re pairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right be hind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.

Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let her sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. Nervous and anxious, Zahra wondered whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” Ali said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you!Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.

C. They wanted to move to big places to seek more pleasure.
D. They disliked the treatment of the boss and animals around.
25. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A. The deer made the workers unable to work.
B. The workers there wanted to kill the deer for meat.
C. It was common for the workers to see a deer there.
D The deer was a ray of light to the dull workers there.
26. How did the men free the deer in the end
A. They blocked all the routes except the proper ones.
B. They caught her and then sent her to the wide wild.
C. They used signals to guide the deer out of the woods.
D. They used foods to guide the deer out to the open doors.
27. Which of the following can best describe the workers
A Cruel and impatient. B. Hard-working and caring.
C. Cautious and courageous. D. Bad-tempered and demanding.
