“You have cancer.” It was the fourth time in seventeen years I’d heard those words. The doctors wanted to put me on a drug for five years. I knew it would take away the joy out of my life. After my husband died, I understood that nobody has five years to spare. So I told the doctors, “No, thanks.”
Usually I don’t pay much attention to my bookshelves, but it was about this time that I happened to notice how crowded they looked. Most of the books had been worth reading once— but not more than once. Why were they still hanging around I found some old plastic bags from the kitchen. I pulled the books off the shelves and put them in bags. With each book I bagged, I seemed to feel a tiny thing causing me worry come off my shoulders. The idea of not making room for them any longer lifted my spirits. I gave them away to the Friends of the Library the next time I drove by there.
My kitchen cupboards(橱柜)were filled with tools I’m awkward to admit I never used. I gave my kitchen extras to the Salvation Army and in return received a cheerful word of blessing.
Owning fewer books saved me maybe ten seconds a month on cleaning, and with fewer unused things in kitchen cupboards I found what I wanted faster. But why should losing something make me feel like a big relief Leaving that question for others to debate, I began to scan the house for things to get rid of. I cleared space like a pioneer clearing land. Sorting out needless possessions(所有物)taught me what was my job and what wasn’t.
No longer did I have to press my life into the space my possessions allowed. I found more time to do whatever was worth doing. Five years have passed. Cancer has not shown up again. Whatever comes my way tomorrow, I have lived today.
24. What was the author’s attitude toward taking drugs for five years

26. Why did the author sort out needless things
A. To help those who are in need. B. To make the room tidy and clean.
C. To focus on the most worthwhile. D. To reduce the pain of the disease.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Stronger than We Think B. More Important than Fear
C. Keeping Less, Living More D. Take More Shortcuts in Life
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. C 27. C

C
Many of the Earth's creatures die because of humans' choices. These choices have nothing to do with food or shelter or anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
People use parts of animals for everything from hats to handbags, from jewelry to ashtrays and to make powders that supposedly improve a person's life. Deciding that a species is endangered and protecting it by law are not always enough. People who kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.
During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause. Wildlife protection groups made sure everyone saw pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory. These groups also proved that certain populations of elephants were decreasing. As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ivory. Laws against poaching (偷猎) were made stronger. Many countries made importing ivory illegal. Killing elephants for their Ivory became more risky and less profitable (有利可图的).
However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while. In the late 1970s, people protested (抗议) against the killing of seal babies. Everyone was shocked to see young seals being killed in their icy habitat. The cruel activity stopped. But ten years later, the number of seal babies killed was higher than ever.
Other animal protection movements have come and gone, such as saving the whales and protecting dolphins. The whale population appears to have increased for now. And the laws are finally changed in America to protect the dolphins that swim with tuna fish in parts of the Pacific Ocean.
In the years to come, people's attention will probably turn to some other endangered species. Plenty of them urgently need attention. During this time, will the elephants be forgotten
28. What leads to the disappearance of millions of wild animals
A. The growing human population.
B. Humans’ hope for making a fortune.
C. Humans’ too much need for wild food.
D. Not having enough laws on wildlife protection..
29. What can you infer from the text about what happened in the late 1980s
A. Wildlife protection groups did make great efforts.
B. Importing ivory in all countries is illegal.
C. Those who killed elephants all got caught.
D. Hunting was completely not allowed.
30. Why are seal babies mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To show the effort to protect seal babies.
B. To show an increasing number of seal babies.
C. To show the decrease of worry about certain species.
D. To show people’s protest against the killing of seal babies.
31. What does the author mean by using the underlined sentence
A. Humans should choose some rare animals to protect.
B. Attention must be paid to saving some endangered wildlife.
C. Success has been achieved in quite a few cases of wildlife protection.
D. Concern and movements for animal protection should be always kept.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. D

根据第一段最后一句“What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.”(世界上数百万动物死亡的原因是人类想赚钱),可知,人类希望发财导致了数百万野生动物的消失,文中“kills millions of animals”( 数百万的动物死亡)和问句中的“the disappearance of millions of wild animals”(数百万野生动物的消失)相呼应;文中“humans want to make money”(人类想赚钱)和B选项“Humans’ hope for making a fortune”(人类希望发财)相呼应。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三句中的“During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause. Wildlife protection groups made sure everyone saw pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory...As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ivory. Laws against poaching (偷猎) were made stronger. Many countries made importing ivory illegal. Killing elephants for their Ivory became more risky and less profitable (有利可图的).”( 20世纪80年代末,拯救大象成了一个流行的事业。野生动物保护组织确保每个人都看到大象的照片或电影:它们的脸被切掉以获取象牙……结果,大多数人不再购买象牙制品。禁止偷猎的法律变得更加严格。许多国家禁止进口象牙。为得到象牙而捕杀大象变得更危险,利润也更低。),可知,在20世纪80年代末,野生动物保护组织确实做出了巨大努力。故选A。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段第一句“However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while.”( 然而,对某些物种的关注会在一段时间后减弱。),可知,第4段提到了海豹宝宝,目的是表明对某些物种的担忧减少了。文中的“concern for certain species”与C选项中“worry about certain species”相对应;文中的“become weak”和C选项中“the decrease”相对应。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Other animal protection movements have come and gone...”(其他动物保护运动来了又去……)和最后一段第一句“In the years to come, people's attention will probably turn to some other endangered species.”(在未来的几年里,人们的关注力可能会转向其他一些濒危物种。),可知,对动物的保护运动和关注力一直在改变,那么在人们关注其他濒危物种时,大象会被遗忘吗?可以推断,作者说这句话的意思是,对动物保护的关注和行动应该一直保持下去。故选D。
D
Think back to your first memory. How old were you at the time Chances are you can’t remember anything earlier than kindergarten or primary school — nothing about your first words, steps, or solid food other than what your parents have later told you. This phenomenon is called “infantile amnesia”, due to which the majority of adults rarely remember things that happen to them before the age of three.
So why is it that we can’t remember being a baby The answer lies in the way that our brain’s ability to store memories changes as we grow. At birth, a baby’s brain is only a quarter of its adult size, growing to three-quarters the size of an adult brain by age two. This increase is associated with a growth in the number of brain cells — called neurons (神经元) — and the connections between these cells.
A part of the brain that is particularly important in forming memories is the hippocampus (海马体), says Dr Dhanisha Jhaveri, a researcher at The University of Queensland. This region stores autobiographical memories from specific events in our lives. “In the hippocampus, new neurons are constantly being created. In adulthood, new cells are still being produced, but the rate of production in the hippocampus slows down,” says Dr Jhaveri.
Neuroscientists believe that the rapid rate at which brain cells are being produced in childhood could be the cause of infantile amnesia. Because so many new neurons are being produced and form connections with each other in memory circuits, they might disrupt (扰乱) existing networks of memories that have already formed.
Despite this memory loss, childhood experiences have been found to influence adult behaviour years later, which suggests that traces of these memories could be stored somewhere in the brain that isn’t easy to access.
In research in animals, scientists have found that latent (潜在的) traces of early experiences remain in the brain for a long time, and can later be triggered (触发) by a reminder. It highlights the important influence of early life experiences on mental and emotional well-being later in life.
32. What is infantile amnesia
A. The inability to form memories during adulthood. B. The inability to recall early experiences.
C. The influence on existing memory networks. D. The influence on mental and emotional well-being.
33. What do we learn about the brain according to the passage
A. New neurons disrupt existing memory circuits. B. The hippocampus plays a passive role in one’s memory.
C. A baby’s brain is three-quarters the size of an adult brain. D. Brain cells are being produced more rapidly in adulthood.
34. What does the research in animals show
A. Memories are stored separately in their brain. B. Memories are mainly formed when they are young.
C. Early experiences have a long-term impact on life. D. Early experiences are easy to be triggered by a reminder.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Formation of Early Childhood Memories
B. The Impact of Infantile Amnesia on Memory Networks
C. The Role of the Hippocampus in Memory Formation
D. The Influence of Early Life Experiences on Mental Well-being
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. B

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要为想成为一个领导者,或从人群中脱颖而出的人提出几点建议。
【36题详解】
本段的主题句是“Be yourself and love yourself. (做自己并且爱自己。)”,上文“In order to be as different as possible, you have to be you — not a carbon copy of someone else.(为了尽可能与众不同,你必须做你自己——而不是别人的翻版)”讲了要“做自己”,C项“It’s important to love yourself, too.(爱自己也很重要)”讲要“爱自己”,与上文是并列关系,且与本段主题相照应,符合上下文连贯。故选C项。
【37题详解】
根据空格前逗号可知,空格部分不是完整句子,只能在E或G项中选择,结合选项和上文“We are naturally raised as part of a group, (我们生来就是群体的一部分)”可知,G项“so we’re constantly being exposed to things others have already approved.(所以我们一直在接触别人已经认可的东西)”与上文构成因果关系,符合上下文连贯。故选G项。
【38题详解】
此空是本句的主题句。根据段中“From a very young age, we’re sort of brainwashed to ft into our society. We wear clothes, go to school, do things to match our gender, and so on. It’s hard to realize that this is a box you can get out of. There are lines that you can color outside. It just hasn’t occurred to most of us.(从很小的时候,我们就被洗脑了,想融入社会。我们穿着衣服,去上学,做一些与我们的性别相匹配的事情,等等。很难意识到这是一个你可以摆脱的盒子。你可以在外面涂上颜色。只是我们大多数人都没想过)”可知,本段主要讲“我们可以在条框之外行事(Color outside the lines.)”。故选A项。
【39题详解】
上文“Nothing is really as it seems. So many people are trying to be different, and it results in them all being the same! Being quiet may mean that when you talk, people hear you louder. When you’re not trying to attract that boy or girl, they become attracted to you.(一切都不是表面看起来的那样。很多人都想与众不同,结果却都一样!保持安静可能意味着当你说话时,人们听到的声音更大。当你不试图吸引那个男孩或女孩时,他们就会被你吸引)”通过举例说明很多时候事与愿违,结果与最初想法不一样,D项“So trying to be different may not get you anywhere.(所以尝试与众不同可能不会让你有任何收获)”是对上文的总结,符合上下文连贯。故选D项。
【40题详解】
上文“People are praised for being fashionable and pretty — few are praised for expanding our limits and coloring outside the lines.(人们因为时尚和漂亮而受到称赞——很少有人因为扩大我们的极限和超越界限而受到称赞)”讲很少有人因突破界限而受到称赞,F项“Criticism is going to happen if you step outside of the box at all.(如果你走出了框框,批评就会发生)”进一步进行说明,其中“step outside of the box”与上文“expanding our limits and coloring outside the lines”相照应,符合上下文连贯。故选F项。

【答案】 Mooncakes: a taste that is out of this world!
Of all the foods I have ever tried, the mooncake is my favourite. There are many versions of mooncakes from different places around China. They have a variety of fillings and among them I love the sweet red bean filling best.
I remember trying my first mooncake with my family when I was very little. We sat outside in my grandparents’ yard while the full moon shone above us. It was a very special moment. My elderly grandmother still bakes mooncakes for the whole family every year. She can turn the flour and red beans into wonderful mooncakes like magic. When she places them on the table, they look adorable—small, round and shiny golden-brown. The delicious smell soon reaches my nose and my mouth starts to water. When I pick up a mooncake, it feels warm and heavy in my hand. As I take each bite, the sweet and mild flavour of the red bean filling slowly fills mymouth.
The mooncake is always my favourite because of its satisfying taste that is out of this world and the happy memories it brings to mind.
Tiramisu cheers me up
My favourite food is a popular Italian dessert called tiramisu.
I first tried it about two years ago, when I visited a bakery with my parents. Each spoonful of this amazing dessert is a light, creamy experience to remember. There are three layers of the cake and the cheese is between the layers, making the dessert feel soft and smooth. There is also a bitter taste of coffee but this flavour is not very strong. Tiramisu does not look very attractive—it’s brown, because of the coffee and dark chocolate, and white, because of the cream and cheese—but all these ingredients make it taste delicious!
Since I tried it for the first time, tiramisu has become my favourite dessert. I have also learnt that the name tiramisu means “cheer me up” in Italian. Whenever I feel unhappy, I eat this dessert and it does make me feel better!

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!

It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect.

A To show the effort to protect seal babies.
B. To show an increasing number of seal babies.
C To show the decrease of worry about certain species.
