My cell phone rang while I was working on my computer. I looked at the phone and saw it was my 17-year-old son, Tom. I quickly picked it up. “Mom, I got a 71 on the test. I did it.” With those few words, I could feel my heart start to pound.
Living in New York State. Students cannot graduate from high school unless they pass at least five exams: one in English, one in science, two in history and one in math. For most students, who work hard, attend class, and do their homework like my son, it isn't that hard. But for Tom, who is dyslexic (朗读困难), it is such a real challenge that some teachers have feared he would never be able to even attempt, never mind achieve.
We were honest with him about his trouble, letting him know that there was nothing to be ashamed of. Some people learn differently. If he was willing to work, we would help him find a way to do as much as he could in his academic career. All that was standing in his way was this math test. He had taken it three times and did better each time, but he continued to fail. He was starting to get a bit tired of me saying this was a marathon not a sprint (冲刺). My heart broke each time we would get the failing results.
“Momthanks. I love you. Thanks for believing I could do this.”
For one of the few times in my life, I really had nothing left to say. For that one brief moment I knew, really, really, knew that everything we did to help our son achieve what he wanted was worth it.

D. She felt worried and anxious.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Mother's Love That Made the Grade
B. A Student Who Struggled for a Diploma
C. Failure Is the Mother of Success
D. Life Is Not a Sprint but a Marathon
C
Final exams are around the comer - but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least effort. This may be because their brains aren’t developed enough to properly assess how high the stakes (利害关系) are, and adapt their behaviour accordingly.
Catherine Insel, at Harvard University, and her team asked adolescents between the ages of 13 and 20 to play a game while monitoring their brains. In some rounds of the game, participants could earn 20 cents fora correct response, while an incorrect one would cost them 10 cents. But in rounds with higher stakes, correct responses were worth a dollar, and wrong answers lost the participants 50 cents.
The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t - their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. And the older the volunteers were, the more improved their performance was.
When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain, which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important. The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous behaviors, such as driving too fast, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby.
Insel thinks schools should reconsider the way they test performance in teenagers. “This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year.
It’s not all bad news for teens. though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t important, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.
28. Why did the researchers set different bets in the game
A. To teach how to make money. B. To better monitor participants’ brains.
C. To show the varied risk levels of the game. D. To meet the needs of different participants.
29. What can be inferred from the passage
A. All students make every effort to prepare for their final exams.
B. The performances in different stakes have little to do with the age.
C. Not well-developed brains may account for teenagers’ risky behavior.
D. The levels of the stakes don’t influence the participants’ performances.
30. What should be kept in mind while assessing students’ performance
A. It should not be judged by only one exam. B. The items in exams should not be too difficult.
C. Exam-focused education should not be adopted. D. Examination is not a good means of evaluating students.
31. What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Positive.
D
Grasses and short trees are growing and expanding around Mount Qomolangma and across the Hi ma lay an region as the area continued to experience the consequences of global warming, researchers have found. Using satellite data from 1993 to 2018, scientists measured “small but significant” increased between 4,150 and 6,000 meters above sea level. “There are now more areas that are covered in plants than there were in 1993,” said Anderson, a scientist who led the research.
While it is still too early to tell what impact this new growth could have on the region, “urgent research” on the potential effects is needed. “We don't know what the impact is — it might be the plants that cause the snow to melt more quickly,” Anderson added.
1.4 billion people depend on water collected in the region. Changes to water supplies could have great impacts on communities in different countries. “We know that plants and the water cycle are coupled,” Anderson explained. “Wherever you have plants growing, it changes the way the water cycle behaved in those areas. This is particularly important in the Himalayas because glaciers are reducing. We know from lots of scientific research that this is already having an impact on water supplies in this region and it will continue to do so as li-mate change continued.”
Climate change is already having an impact on Himalayan communities, A 2019 study found that Hi ma lay an glaciers have been losing almost half a meter of ice each year since the start of this century. This has already resulted in local communities being flooded — and could ultimately result in drought. Last year, a researcher from the International Centre found that at least a third of the ice in the region, which is home to Mount Qomolangma, could melt by the end of the century.
32. What changes happened to Mount Qomolangma from 1993 to 2018
A. Sea levels rose quickly. B. More plants grew there.
C. Grasses died out there. D. Temperatures declined.
33. Why does the author mention Anderson in paragraph 2
A. To explain the causes of climate change. B. To prove the effects of glaciers melting.
C. To present the reasons for plants growing. D. To show the necessity of the urgent research.
34. What affected the water supply in the Himalayas
A. The way of the water cycle. B. The varieties of plants.
C. The large population. D. The increasing glaciers.
35. Why would Himalayan communities end in drought
A. It seldom snows there. B. They have great floods these years.
C. The glaciers would disappear. D. More plants will grow there.

W: She has a reason.

Jack is a 12-year-old boy. He has an 8-year-old brother called Ted. They live in a southern African country. There they live at Wild Dog Research Camp, where their father studies wild dogs and other wild animals. Their mother teaches local children about the natural world there. More than 12 adults live at the camp, including their teacher who is also their mother. The others are workers who help cook and keep the camp clean, and researchers who have come to learn about wildlife. There are fifteen tents in the camp. Ten of them are for researchers and five of the them for camp workers. Jack and Ted take classes in the camp about four months out of the year. Ted’s favorite part of the day is when school is over. Then he can go and do other things, like going out with some of the students to research wild animals. Jack wants to train dogs for movies when he grows up. He likes the wild dogs best. He thinks they are very social animals and are always nice to each other. Both the boys have learned a lot about the animals that their father works to understand and protect.

“Mom,thanks. I love you. Thanks for believing I could do this.”
For one of the few times in my life, I really had nothing left to say. For that one brief moment I knew, really, really, knew that everything we did to help our son achieve what he wanted was worth it.
24. What does the underlined word “pound” in Paragraph l probably mean
A. Sink suddenly. B. Beat wildly.
C. Ache violently. D. Break totally.
25. According to the text, Tom was weak in _________.
A. English B. science C. history D. math
26. How did the writer feel when she wrote this text
A. She felt proud and satisfied.
B. She felt surprised and bitter.
C. She felt grateful and relaxed.
D. She felt worried and anxious.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Mother's Love That Made the Grade
B. A Student Who Struggled for a Diploma
C. Failure Is the Mother of Success
D. Life Is Not a Sprint but a Marathon
B 25. D 26. A 27. A

根据划线词上文““Mom, I got a 71 on the test. I did it.” With those few words (“妈妈,我考试得了71分。我做到了。”)可知作者听到儿子说做到了,考试及格了,应该是非常激动,所以下文意思是“听到这几句话,我的心开始怦怦直跳。”所以pound意思是连续重击,和B选项“beat wildly(疯狂地敲打)”同义。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“All that was standing in his way was this math test. He had taken it three times and did better each time, but he continued to fail. (唯一阻碍他的就是这次数学考试。他考了三次,一次比一次好,但还是失败了。)”可知,Tom已经考了三次数学,所以他的数学是弱课。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其最后一段“For one of the few times in my life, I really had nothing left to say. For that one brief moment I knew, really, really, knew that everything we did to help our son achieve what he wanted was worth it. (这是我一生中为数不多的几次,我真的无话可说。在那短暂的一刻,我知道,真的,真的,知道我们所做的一切帮助儿子实现他想要的是值得的。)”可知作者对于儿子最后通过考试很满意,也为儿子自豪。故选A。
故选A。
C To show the varied risk levels of the game.
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Positive.
C 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据第三段中“The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t — their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. (研究小组发现,虽然年龄较大的志愿者在高风险回合中表现更好,但年龄较小的志愿者没有——他们的表现并没有随着风险的高低而改变)”可知,研究的结果发现“年纪稍大的参与者在利害关系更高的回合中表现得更好”。由此可推知,研究人员设置不同赌注的目的是为了使游戏的冒险程度不同。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain, which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important. The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous behaviors, such as driving too fast, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby.(当研究小组观察志愿者的大脑活动时,他们发现志愿者提高表现的能力与他们的大脑发育程度有关。大脑中的一个区域在我们至少25岁之前一直在发育,这个区域似乎特别重要。这些发现解释了为什么一些青少年对于危险行为如开车太快这样的危险行为漠不关心,尤其是当他们的朋友在附近的时候。)”可知,研究发现志愿者提高表现的能力与他们的大脑发育程度有关,这解释了为什么一些青少年对于危险行为漠不关心,由此可推知,不发达的大脑可能是青少年危险行为的原因。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段第二句话““This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. (她表示:“这项研究表明,在一次期末考试中评估学校表现并不是一个好主意”。一个更好的办法是使用各种各样的小型测试,全年进行。)”可知,在评价学生的成绩时应该注意不应该只通过一次考试来判断。故选A。
根据最后一段“It’s not all bad news for teens. though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t important, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example.(不过,这对青少年来说并不都是坏消息。青少年将同样的精力投入到不“重要”的任务中,并开始喜欢业余爱好而不是上学。这可能是一件好事,比如让青少年学习复杂的社交技能)”可推知,Insel认为青少年花时间做一些不重要的事情可能也是一件好事,让他们可以学到复杂的社交技巧。由此推知,Insel对此态度是“赞同的”。故选D。

C To present the reasons for plants growing. D. To show the necessity of the urgent research.
34. What affected the water supply in the Himalayas
A. The way of the water cycle. B. The varieties of plants.
C. The large population. D. The increasing glaciers.
35. Why would Himalayan communities end in drought
A. It seldom snows there. B. They have great floods these years.
C. The glaciers would disappear. D. More plants will grow there.
B 33. D 34. A 35. C
