Called “America’s wolf”, the red wolf is the only large predator whose historic range is found entirely within the United States, stretching from Texas to New England. But hunting gradually reduced its range, and it was declared extinct in the wild in 1980.
Recovery efforts in the wild began in 1987 on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. In a ground-breaking successful experiment, eight captive (圈养的) wolves were released this year into North Carolina, eventually growing into a population over 100, reaching a peak of around 120 wolves in 2012. But illegal hunting and management changes by the Fish and Wildlife Service resulted in their numbers plummeting.
In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups (幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.
To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.
The Service also recently announced it would withdraw a 2018 proposal to shrink (缩小) the red wolves’ protected area in North Carolina by 90 percent, after a lawsuit accused the agency of going against the Endangered Species Act. Ron Sutherland of the Wildlands Network says it’s crucial that the agency has abandoned this wrong-headed proposal. And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018 — this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.
24. What does the underlined word “plummeting” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Promising. B. Declining. C. Multiplying. D. Increasing.
25. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. The released wolves lived well.
B. The population boosted after the release.
C. The red wolf faced greater threat than before.
D. The released red wolves still needed protection.
26. What would the Service do to save red wolves
A. Shrink the red wolves’ reserves.
B. Make a proposal to protect the red wolves.
C. Put some red wolves in some specific places.
D. Force the protected area into the state of emergency.
27. What does the text focus on
A. The protection of red wolves. B. Challenges faced by red wolves.
C. Reasons for red wolves extinction. D. The relationship between red wolves and humans.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A
根据第三段“In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups(幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.(今年春天,环保主义者庆祝了一个小小的好消息:四只圈养出生的红狼幼崽被放进一个洞穴,成功地被一只野生红狼妈妈收养。与此同时,另外四只成年红狼被放归野外。这些幼崽被认为仍然活着,健康。但成年红狼并不顺利。在释放后的几个月里,三头被汽车撞死,第四头在私人土地上被枪杀。)”可推断,被放生野外的红狼还需要保护。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.(在这些死亡事件后,为了增加红狼的数量,美国鱼类和野生动物管理局在11月宣布,计划在今年冬天释放9只成年红狼到它们的恢复区,即两个野生动物保护区及其周围的土地上。)”可知,该机构计划今年释放一些红狼到特定的地区。故选C。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018—this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.(然而,现在的情况甚至比2018年更紧迫——这应该启动美国的保护社区进入危机模式,以拯救这个物种,并使其从灭绝中恢复。)”及全文可知,文章第一段和第二段主要讲了红狼的数量减少,而之后的段落主要讲述的是如何保护红狼。所以这篇文章的重点是保护红狼。故选A。
C
Around the world, many people come together on 3lst December to celebrate the coming of the New Year, which is called Hogmanay in Scotland. The tradition of Hogmanay comes from Viking times and the celebration is more popular than Christmas in Scotland.

It may be made possible for computers and robots to "read" human personalities by reading human eye movements.
The eyes are really the windows to the soul. That is the result of a new study on the connection between eye movements and personality, conducted by neuroscience researchers based at the University of South Australia and Published in the scientific Journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. And if that is true, computers and robots powered by sophisticated algorithms (算法) may soon have the ability to peer into your soul.
"Eye movements during an everyday task predict aspects of our personality," wrote the researchers, led by Tobias Loetscher, whose team followed 42 study subjects around the university campus recording their eye movements, then determined their personality traits (特点) with "well-established questionnaires" for determining personality type, and unfolded some kind of connections between eye movements and personality, according to a summary of the study published by the site Science Daily.
The researchers expected that with the data fed into their algorithms computers running the algorithms were able to record human eye movements and immediately determine a person's major personality traits, such as "neuroticism, extraversion (外向),agreeableness, conscientiousness, as well as perceptual curiosity", the scientists wrote.
"The new finding might help improve the way human beings interact with their computers and other high-tech devices, even robots, allowing for more natural and realistic social interactions with machines," Loetscher said.
"People are always looking for improved, personalized services. Today's robots and computers are not socially aware so they cannot adapt to non-verbal information," Loetscher said in a statement quoted by Indian Express. "This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers that can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals."
The study revealed previously undiscovered relations between specific personality characteristics and specific eye movement tendencies, according to a summary in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper.
32. What is the finding of the new study
A. Robots can understand human personality.
B. Eye movements connect with personality.
C. Computers record human eye movements.
D. Personality determines human eye movements.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly introduce
A. The research subjects.
B. The research process.
C. The research outcomes.
D. The research application.
34. What can be inferred from what Loetscher said
A. Robots will be smarter than humans.
B. Machines may become more social.
C. The research is of little significance.
D. Human-machine interaction will explode.
35. What does the text mainly tell us
A. The finding of a new study.
B. Eyes as windows to the soul.
C. The human-machine interaction.
D. The development of high-tech devices.

Three years ago, I was offered a better job and went to work in a new clinic of a small hospital in Victor Harbor, an hour away from my house. I rushed there on my first day, driving to the clinic and getting used to the different rules there.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new environment, I removed my three rings according to the rules: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was a gift from my husband. I put them in a wrinkled tissue and placed them beside my computer.
During midday break, I ate my lunch at my desk and when I was finished, I hurriedly cleared away the waste, together with the wrinkled tissue into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well. I met new patients and felt that I had done a good job.
Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I spent an hour or so making telephone calls, trying to locate my rings. The first people I called were my manager and colleagues, and they gave me a few contact numbers for the cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been emptied and gone to rubbish station.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done then. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most important rings-my mother’s wedding ring. If I had not been so careless, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there in my chair wondering what I should do.

After two hours or so I received the most amazing phone call in my life.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After two hours or so, I received the most amazing phone call in my life. The call was from another cleaner called Jerry, who was working at the rubbish station nearby. He told me that he accidentally found the three rings in the tissue when he was sorting the rubbish. So immediately, he called the lady managing the cleaning services for the clinic. The lady told him my story and gave him my phone number. He rang me to relieve my anxiety.
I decided to thank the wonderful person face to face. I ran to my car in a hurry and drove directly to the rubbish station near my clinic, where Jerry was waiting for me. I expressed my greatest thanks to him for his kindness and I did want to give him some money as a gift for his behavior. However, he refused my reward, saying that it was his duty and responsibility to give back the lost things to the owners. Deeply moved, I thanked him again. At last, I got my important rings back.

"People are always looking for improved personalized services.

D. Personality determines human eye movements.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly introduce
A. The research subjects.
B. The research process.
C. The research outcomes.
D. The research application.
34. What can be inferred from what Loetscher said
A Robots will be smarter than humans.
B. Machines may become more social.
C. The research is of little significance.
D. Human-machine interaction will explode.
35. What does the text mainly tell us
A. The finding of a new study.
B. Eyes as windows to the soul.
C. The human-machine interaction.
