It was an oral English class and in front of us was standing our teacher Linda, who was a university student from the US. Somehow we came to the point whether any of us could sing an English pop in front of the class. You know, maybe three or more out of ten Chinese students are shy in class. As a result, there was silence in class for quite a while, which made everybody feel rather embarrassed, including the teacher.
I was a shy boy. However, just at that moment, a great idea struck me suddenly. “Seize the opportunity! Seize the opportunity! Yes, there couldn’t be a better opportunity,” I said to myself. “Why not seize it Why should I have always to be the guy regretting missing the opportunity just because of shyness ” Yes, maybe I should have a try.
So I raised my hand. And I remember that it took me quite a while to think what the song’s name was. Though I sang no more than five sentences because of forgetting the lyrics (歌词), their clapping hands told me that I did the job well. Later, I got a gift and I was really happy.
I think that is one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. Through this experience, I’ve also got to know that we should believe that we can do the job well, no matter how difficult it seems for us. Just have a little more courage.
24.Where was the English teacher Linda from
A.Australia. B.America. C.Canada. D.England.
25.Why did the author raise his hand in class
A.He wanted to sing an English song. B.He would like to ask an English question.

26.After the teacher asked the students to sing an English pop song, ______.
A.a few began to sing one by one B.many students wanted to have a try
C.almost all the students were excited D.the students kept silent for some time
27.What does the author want to tell us in the text
A.Students should be active in class. B.Hard work can help people succeed.
C.People need courage to overcome difficulties. D.Being helpful can benefit oneself and others.
C
When you’re sitting in class or behind your desk waiting for the clock to strike a time when you can go home, it is natural that your mind should wander a bit. It is common for your mind to wander to a vacation and even travel the world. What if there is a way that you can travel the world without having to pay any money
A person that managed to make it around the world without spending much was Shantanu Starick. How did he trade off his service Starick realized that as a photographer he had a service that people would usually be willing to pay money for, but he would instead offer his photography service to anyone who could provide him with food, shelter and transportation.
Starick has been traveling for a surprising 30 months and has visited countries ranging from the United States to Ecuador.
In English-speaking countries, trading off services and communicating aren’t difficult for Starick. However, in farther areas where there isn’t an English-speaking person in sight it can be quite difficult. More than anything, the locals appreciate the effort behind trying to speak their language, even if he doesn’t exactly sound like a native speaker.
You can do it too!
Honestly, with a bit of confidence, drive and a skill you can trade, you’ll be able to do exactly the same as Starick.
Start thinking about what you can do to get around the world without paying money. With our social networks and the connectivity our world has, you can easily connect with and market yourself to people across the world without any effort.
28.What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic. B.To describe students in class.
C.To give an example for the text. D.To show people’s state of mind.
29.What does the underlined phrase “trade off” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Join. B.Exchange. C.Stop. D.Improve.
30.In the locals’ opinion, what is the key for travelers in non-English-speaking countries
A.The skills. B.The confidence to succeed.
C.The bravery to travel. D.The effort to speak the local language.
31.What do we know about Shantanu Starick
A.He is too poor to afford the travels. B.His job is only traveling around the world.
C.He has a skill to travel without paying much money. D.He doesn’t hear of other languages except English.
D
There’s more evidence that what’s good for, your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity (中等强度) exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes (成天看电视的人).
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,” said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss. Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive people when comparing the results,” the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病) but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.
32.What can we learn from the study
A.Ten people scored best on the tests. B.High-intensity exercise is better.
C.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise. D.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
33.How did the study team come to the conclusion
A.By using examples. B.By making a comparison.
C.By observing people exercise. D.By doing a brain MRI.
34.What do we know from the last paragraph
A.Exercise can put off the beginning of memory decline.
B.The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
C.Exercise will definitely strengthen people’s memory.
D.Alzheimer’s disease may be held back by moderate intensity exercise.
35.What’s the best title for the text
A.To Exercise or Not B.How to Keep Healthy
C.Ways to Make Your Brain Work Better D.Moderate Intensity Exercise Keeps Your Brain Younger

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let’s go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (胆小鬼),” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and went to school as usual the next day.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. They looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude act, because he knew that they misunderstood him, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽略) the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but he failed. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did nothing to help him.

参考范文
Dear Bob,
I am writing to ask for advice on some difficulties that we have met in our English study.
Since we entered senior high school, it has become difficult to remember so many English words. For fear of making mistakes, we don’t want to speak English in English class. What’s more, when reading English articles, we often meet some new words, which makes it hard for us to understand the articles. These difficulties worry us a lot.
I would appreciate it if you could offer us some suggestions about these problems. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
六、读后续写(满分25分)
参考范文
It seemed that Robert would be dying. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, he brought Robert to the shore. He didn’t leave there. Instead, he stayed with Robert all the time to make sure that Robert was OK.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.

W: I’ve got a student travel card. You can get cheap train tickets with it.
M: That sounds good. How much does it cost
W: A card for six months is sixteen pounds.
M: So how do I get one
W: You need some photos—one for the card and one for the form.
M: I don’t have to show my ID card, do I
W: That’s right. You only need a letter from your school.
M: I’ll ask my teacher for one. Next time you go to London, I’ll come, too.
(Text 9)
M: Amy, what’s your favorite sport
W: Er...that’s hard to say. But I like running.
M: You run very fast, don’t you
W: Yes, but not the fastest. Lily runs much faster than I.
M: Really
W: Yes. In our class, Lily runs the fastest of all. What about you, Steven What do you like
M: You like running, but I like jumping, both the high jump and the long jump.
W: Did you take part in the sports meeting last year
M: Yes. I took part in the high jump and the long jump and won the first prize in the long jump last year.
W: You are also going to take part in this year’s long jump, right
M: Yeah! I’ll try to make a better record.
W: Good luck!
(Text 10)
My daily routine...Well, I get up at about 10:00, and I usually have breakfast in the garden. I love sitting in the garden reading the newspaper. I have lunch at about 2:00, and then practice my violin in the afternoon. Concerts in Liverpool usually start at 8:00, so I go to work at half past six and get the train to the city center. After the concert...er...well, I finish work at about half past ten, then have dinner in a restaurant with some friends from the band. I usually take a taxi from the restaurant, and get home at about half past twelve. Then I watch TV or read a book, and go to bed at about 2:00 in the morning. And, that’s my day.
