72 hours in Beijing
Traveling to China is no longer a luxury for many foreign passport holders. The Chinese government has permitted a 72-hour visa free policy that offers access to visitors from 53 countries including the US, France and Austria. Let’s start with the capital of China, Beijing. Here’s a pick of the best in Beijing.
Mutianyu Great Wall
Your trip to Beijing isn’t really complete without seeing one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” — the Great Wall of China. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is by far the most well-preserved of all. Taking a one-hour bus ride, Mutianyu would be your ideal location for a half-day of hiking away from the large crowds in the city. Also, the authorities have allowed tourists to paint graffiti on a specific section of the Great Wall since 2014. The Great Wall was designated (把……定名为) a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
Summer Palace
Located in northwestern Beijing, the Summer Palace is by far the city’s most well-preserved royal park. With its huge lake and hilltop views, the palace offers you a pastoral escape into the landscape of traditional Chinese paintings. The Summer Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
798 Art Zone
This would be on the top of my list! Named after the 798 factory that was built in the 1950s, the art zone is home to various galleries, design studios, art exhibition spaces, fashionable shops and bars. You could easily spend half your day wandering around the complex, feeling the contrast of the present and the past.
Sichuan Provincial Restaurant
While in Beijing, apart from trying the city’s best-known Peking duck, the Sichuan provincial restaurant is one of places where you can enjoy regional delicious food. It offers one of China’s eight great cuisines, Sichuan Cuisine, which ranges from Mapo tofu to spicy chicken.
1. When was the Summer Palace added to the UNESCO World Heritage List

In Scotland, 600,000 tonnes of food are thrown away every year. This amount of food, which could feed about 1.2 billion poor people, is almost a third of household (家庭的) waste. And food waste isn’t just a big problem in Scotland.
Money, time, and resources are often wasted by throwing away good food. It also causes very harmful greenhouse gas, which is perilous to the planet.
In the production stage, some foods do not enter the food chain for many reasons. Supermarkets usually care about the quality of food from farms. They often refuse strange-looking and unusually sized produce. However, they seem to forget that it is almost impossible to grow the perfect produce. Food waste at the consumption (消费) stage includes food going out of date and leftovers (剩饭) because of too much food. In households, even mostly fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away.
In order to reduce food waste, here is what we can do:
Understand the terms “use by” and “best before” dates. “Use by” dates are there for your safety. It is dangerous to eat food after the use-by date and doing so risks your health. “Best before” dates tell you how long the food will be at its best quality. Once the food passes the date, it isn’t necessarily bad, but you should still check, just to be sure.
Every time you go shopping and bring back new food, put them at the back of your fridge and bring the food that will expire (到期) soon closer to the front. That way, you know what needs to be eaten first.
If you have any food that will expire soon, give it to charity if you aren’t going to eat it. They will really appreciate the food you have given.
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A. Food waste is the biggest part of household waste.
B. Household waste hasn’t drawn much attention.
C. People in Scotland waste the most food.
D. Food waste is a common problem.
5. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Valuable. B. Dangerous. C. Different. D. Unnecessary.
6. What should people do to reduce food waste according to the text
A. Pick usually sized produce.
B. Improve the quality of farm produce.
C. Order produce directly from farmers.
D. Avoid buying too much food at a time.
7. What advice does the author offer to people
A. Buy food that will expire soon to reduce waste.
B. Place food carefully according to its expiry date.
C. Throw away food that passes the best-before date.
D. Give food that has passed its use-by date to charity.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. B

The world may have a new supercontinent within 200 million to 300 million years as the Pacific Ocean shrinks and closes.
Researchers at Curtin University in Australia and Peking University in China used a supercomputer to model the evolution of Earth’s tectonic plates (地质构造板块) and the formation of a future supercontinent. Their findings were published in the journal National science Review.
“Over the past two billion years, Earth’s continents have collided (相撞) together to form a supercontinent every 600 million years, known as the supercontinent cycle. This means that current continents are due to come together again in a couple of hundred million years’ time,” said lead author Dr. Chuan Huang, a research fellow in Curtin’s Earth Dynamics Research Group and the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
The team’s simulation showed that due to the fact that Earth has been cooling for billions of years since its formation, the thickness and strength of the tectonic plates beneath the oceans have reduced over time. As a result, the formation of a new supercontinent is more likely to happen by the closing up of the Pacific Ocean. Reducing by a few centimeters per year, the Pacific Ocean’s current reach of 10,000 kilometers will close up in less than 300 million years.
“The resulting new supercontinent has already been named Amasia because some believe that the Pacific Ocean will close when America collides with Asia. Australia is also expected to play a role in this important Earth event, first colliding with Asia and then connecting America and Asia once the Pacific Ocean closes,” Huang said.
Changes in the distribution of continents and oceans will cause changes in climates, “particularly when ocean currents are stopped by continental collision, or new ocean currents are formed when continents break apart,” said study coauthor Zheng-Xiang Li, distinguished professor in Curtin’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences. “Earth, as we know, will be completely different when Amasia forms. The sea level is expected to be lower, and the vast interior (内陆) of the supercontinent will be very dry with high daily temperature ranges.”
Researchers expect more earthquakes as the continental plates collide. Surrounded by a new super ocean, the newly formed supercontinent will also have decreased biodiversity.
Scientists are still trying to understand Earth’s supercontinent cycle, which is driven by heat and gravity. The research team wants to establish how Earth’s tectonic plates started and when the first continents formed, as well as what kicked off the supercontinent cycle.“We are only starting to look at the entire Earth system, from its core to its atmosphere, as a closely linked system that evolved together,”Li said.
8. What leads to the formation of the new supercontinent
A. The rising temperature of the Earth. B. The expansion of the Pacific Ocean.
C. The reduced strength of the tectonic plates. D. The appearance of many new tectonic plates.
9. What is believed by some scientists about the new supercontinent
A. The involving parts. B. Its climate pattern.
C. The way it breaks apart. D. Its distance from Australia.
10. What will probably happen to the newly formed supercontinent
A. There will be a rise in the sea level.
B There will be lots of water in its interior.
C. The variety of its living things will be reduced.
D. Its temperature will stay the same all year around.
11 What does the last paragraph mainly want to show
A. The entire Earth system faces an uncertain future.
B. The origin of the supercontinent cycle is hard to trace.
C. The Earth’s supercontinent cycle will pose a big threat.
D. There is more to discover about the supercontinent cycle.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D

Dangerous drivers can be anywhere. Drunk, sleepy and distracted driving can sometimes end tragically, notes Jeesung Lee, 17. This rising high-school junior in South Korea attends St. Johnsbury Academy Jeju. He wondered whether AI could help warn people of such drivers. A system he’s designed can now warn drivers when other drivers near them are acting dangerously.
Jeesung’s system can find cars traveling at dangerous speeds or suddenly switching lanes(车道). His computer program then sends a message to cellphones in the area. It can text drivers to watch out. Live video surveys many major roads around the globe, often for traffic reports, especially to assess what happened after an accident occurs, Jeesung notes. His AI-based program instead aims to head off accidents.
It monitors streaming video in real time. Jeesung trained his computer program with publicly available videos showing car accidents. He then tested his system using video it hadn’t seen. It correctly identified dangerous driving some 80, percent of the time, the teen now reports. It also sends out warnings less than two seconds after spotting risky driving.
You can’t get those warnings just yet. To do so, Jeesung wants to use GPS to pinpoint the locations of phone users. That would require permission from South Korea’s government, he notes. But the system should prove quick and reliable, Jeesung says. And it should cost little, he adds. It needs no additional hardware. And his system can be used with existing cameras.
Car accidents are a leading cause of death and injuries. Jeesung hopes a system like his can limit these. He aims to continue improving and testing the system in Jeju and eventually go global.
12. What caused Jeesung to design the system
A. Feeling sleepy in class. B. Playing computer games.
C. Seeing dangerous drivers. D. Acting wrongly after drinking.
13. What is the purpose of Jeesung’s design
A. To speed up cars. B. To stop accidents.
C. To report accidents. D. To survey main roads.
14. What can we infer from paragraph 4
A. The system will be cheap.
B. Existing hardware is of little use.
C. Jeesung can know the locations of phone users.
D. South Korea’s government has given Jeesung permission.
15 What can we learn about Jeesung
A. He is warm-hearted. B. He is ambitious.
C. He has a lot of money. D. He has an expensive car.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. B

41. which 42. flowed
43 traveling##travelling
44. exactly
45. has been put
由前面的“all-round scholar of astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology and medical science”和后面的“in the field of scientific writing ”可知,句子表示“然而,沈括的声誉主要是在科学写作领域”,因此空格处是“然而”,即however,位于句首,首字母大写,故填However。
【38题详解】
考查不定式。句意:然而,沈括的声誉主要是在科学写作领域:他是第一个建立图形地图的人。the first后用不定式作后置定语,因此空格处是不定式to build,故填to build。
由“in his”和空格处的提示thirty可知,空格处是in one’s thirties,意为“在某人三十几岁时”,因此空格处是thirties,故填thirties。
故填traveling/travelling。
由So far可知,句子时态是现在完成时,书是被翻译,因此空格处用现在完成时的被动语态,即have/has been done,主语this amazing scientific work是单数,因此空格处是has been put。故填has been put。

第二节 (满分 25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked, “This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard "
“The thought hadn't crossed my mind."
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class.”
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me-You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR(心肺复苏), and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well- intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look, I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell that he had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I’m happy I didn’t take the easy way out.

A. In 1950. B. In 1987.
C. In 1998. D. In 2014.
2. Which place is the author’s first choice when visiting Beijing
A Mutianyu Great Wall. B. 798 Art Zone.
C. Summer Palace. D. Sichuan Provincial Restaurant.
3. Who is the passage intended for
A. The tourists who prefer to travel for free.
B. The foreigners to stay in Beijing for 4 days.
C. The visitors coming from every corner of China.
D. The foreigners coming to Beijing for the first time.

C
B. There will be lots of water in its interior.
C. The variety of its living things will be reduced.
D. Its temperature will stay the same all year around.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly want to show
A. The entire Earth system faces an uncertain future.
B. The origin of the supercontinent cycle is hard to trace.
C The Earth’s supercontinent cycle will pose a big threat.
D. There is more to discover about the supercontinent cycle.
Live video surveys many major roads around the globe often for traffic reports, especially to assess what happened after an accident occurs, Jeesung notes.
15. What can we learn about Jeesung
A. He is warm-hearted. B. He is ambitious.
C. He has a lot of money. D. He has an expensive car.
