Hello and welcome to English with Lucy. Today we have another topic:“Four common British expressions.” Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well.
Four Common British Expressions:
“A piece of cake.”
And this is very similar to “Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy,” which we've discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saving, “That exam was a piece of cake. ”
“Break a leg!”
It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!” So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!”
“It cost an arm and a leg.”
And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money.
“To call it a day.”
And this means “to end a task”. So, for example, “I'm feeling a bit tired. I think I'll call it a day. ”That means “I think I'll stop here. Let's finish.”
Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions.” I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something.
21. How can Chinese listeners connect with Lucy
A. With Wechat B. Through Weibo C. On Facebook D. By YouTube.

A. Break a leg! B. It cost an arm and a leg.
C. To call it a day D. A piece of cake.
23. What does he/she mean when the teacher says “Let's call it a day.”
A. He/She will stop that day B. He/She feels tired
C. Class is over. D. It is daytime.

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made.
Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental maths.
I have only the unmemorable memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honour with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist:One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self discipline but all training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
24. What impressed the author deeply during his childhood
A. Wildlife. B. Music.
C. Languages. D. Literature.
25. Why can’t the author remember his relatives clearly
A. He didn’t live with them for long.
B. The family was extremely large.
C. He was fully occupied with observing nature.
D. He was too young when he lived with them.
26. According to the author, what personality should a born naturalist have first of all
A. Being knowledgeable.
B. Being self disciplined.
C. Being full of ambition.
D. Being full of enthusiasm.
27. Why does the author say he is a naturalist, not a scientist
A. He thinks he lacks some quality required of a scientist.
B. He thinks he has much trouble doing mental arithmetic.
C. He thinks he comes up with solutions in a most natural way.
D. He thinks he just reads about other people’s observations.
C
I was sitting at an airport restaurant when I received the email. It informed me I had failed my qualifying exam on my third attempt, which meant dismissal (解雇) from a science program. I knew things hadn’t gone perfectly. But I was still dumbfounded. How was it possible that one exam could deny all my other successes and define me as unfit to be a scientist
As an Afro-Latinx first-generation college graduate, I didn’t have family members who could tell me what Ph. D. program was like. But I struggled with my classes, spending countless hours studying in the library. I ended that year with increased confidence. But my confidence disappeared when I made my first attempt at the qualifying exam. Because I had never taken an oral (口头的) exam before, the result was disappointing.
I switched research projects 5 months later because my first teacher left the university. This gave me no confidence in taking the exam again. Not surprisingly, I failed again. That’s when I was told I’d have one more chance.
For the next 2 months, I did everything in my power to prepare. I even stopped doing lab work to focus on my exam preparations. I was all in. But I still failed.
I reflected (反思) on how different my experience going into the exam was from my peers’. This exam does not represent a lot. My teacher believed in me and persuaded the department to allow me to complete the Ph. D. degree. So I carried on with my research. I still have a little voice in the back of my head that I'm not good enough. But I try to quiet it by surrounding myself with teachers who support me and by staying focused on developing into the great scientist I know I can be. In the end, I am much more than that 1-hour exam.
28. What does the underlined word “dumbfounded” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Shocked. B. Annoyed. C. Embarrassed. D. Excited.
29. Why did the author fail the first exam
A He did not study very hard. B. His teacher no longer worked there.
C. He was dismissed from his program. D. He was not good at oral exams.
30. How many times did the author attend the exam
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
31. What does the author most probably agree with
A. It is impossible for him to be a scientist.
B. One test cannot determine a person's life.
C Exams can show a person's ability.
D. Support is more important than hard work.

Concerns about the environment and climate change have never been more heightened. Though some may choose to ignore these important issues, others are inspired to act on behalf of the planet’s well-being. One privately funded company called Earth 300 seeks to lead the charge on finding solutions to the most serious issues of our time. They hope to create a center for cutting-edge scientific research on the high seas by inviting the world’s most forward-thinking scientists and pioneers to start research voyages (航行) in a 984-foot nuclear-powered super ship.
“We are living at a critical moment in human history, facing the greatest challenge since the dawn of man—climate change,” says Aaron Olivera, the CEO of Earth 300. “So our goal is to ring the climate alarm globally and develop a new brand of leaders who will support a new economic and ecological vision (生态愿景) for the world.”
The ship shares the same name as the company. To promote the aims of Earth 300’s noble mission, the ship will be equipped with 22 best labs filled with the latest technology. It will host research on energy independence, water and food security, climate disasters, and other important areas of global concern.
In addition to 160 of the world’s leading scientists, the ship will also welcome 20 experts from other fields—business managers, economists, engineers, explorers, and artists—20 students, and 40 VIP guests on each voyage. The ship will have features found on many different types of ships, including cruise ships, expedition and research ships, and luxury yachts. However, Earth 300 fails to be placed into any one of those types.
The super ship will be powered by a type of nuclear (核能的) power that is considered to be a safe and sustainable (可持续的) form of clean energy. In addition, it will house a number of underwater ships to aid in any deep-sea studies. Already backed by several well-known partners—including IBM, NED-Project, and RINA—Earth 300 is expected to launch its first voyage by 2025.
32. What is the company Earth 300 planning to do
A. Organize an around-the-world trip. B. Fund new scientific research.
C. Build a movable research center at sea. D. Study the use of nuclear power.
33. What is the aim of the project Earth 300
A. To set a new standard for the world. B. To draw global attention to climate change.
C. To select a new head of the company. D. To develop a type of sustainable energy.
34. What can be inferred about the super ship
A. It’ll be environmentally friendly. B. It’ll be the first nuclear-powered ship.
C. It’ll be classed as a research ship. D. It’ll explore underwater for new energy.

Mrs. Peterson was my tenth-grade biology teacher, a cool woman in her late twenties. She has taught us for several months. She was an easygoing and nice teacher that loved to walk into our heart and often cared about us. And she had a wonderful way of making the most boring lessons fun. All of these made her popular with all of us students.
On a Tuesday morning, early before the biology class, we were seated in the classroom as usual, waiting for the coming of Mrs. Peterson. To our surprise, it was a teacher we were not familiar with that stepped into our class. She wore white tennis shoes and thick glasses. “Hi, everyone. I am Mrs. Ferguson,” she introduced herself. And then she added, “From now on, I'll teach you biology. Mrs. Peterson has had her baby, and she couldn't return to teaching this year.”
Hearing the unexpected news, all of us immediately felt upset and missed Mrs. Peterson. During Mrs. Ferguson's first class given to us, clearly we were not as active as before. And actually, during Mrs. Ferguson's several following classes, we still remained inactive. One reason was that there seemed to be a thick wall standing between Mrs. Ferguson and us.
I was a basketball cheerleader of our school. One day after school and a long cheerleading practice, my friend Alex and I were looking for a place to fix our hair before attending the tryout(选拔)for cheerleaders in a national basketball game. When walking past Mrs. Ferguson's room, we were surprised to see her at her desk grading papers. Seeing us look at her, she said with a smile, “Hi, girls, can I help you ”
Hearing it, we stopped. “We're just looking for a place to plug in(给…接通电源)our hair-fixing-tool, ”I said. She probably considered we were vain(自负的)and stupid cheerleaders.

Although there are no guarantees when it comes to preventing memory loss, certain activities might help. Consider the following simple ways to sharpen your memory.
Include Physical Activity in Your Daily Routine
Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. This might help keep your memory sharp.
Stay Mentally Active
Just as physical activity helps keep your body in shape, mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape and might keep memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Take alternate routes when driving. Volunteer at a local school or community organization.
Socialize Regularly
Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress. Look for opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends and others, especially if you live alone.
Sleep Well
Sleep plays an important role in helping you consolidate your memories, so you can recall them down the road. Make getting enough sleep a priority.
Eat a Healthy Diet
A healthy diet might be as good for your brain as it is for your heart. Eat fruits vegetables and whole grains. What you drink counts, too. Too much alcohol can lead to confusion and memory loss.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

If I say “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money.

【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. A

【38题详解】
根据上文内容From a very young age, the old values and attitudes, including respect for their elders and a feeling of responsibility to the family, are passed from the older generation to the young.(从很小的时候起,古老的价值观和态度,包括对长辈的尊重和对家庭的责任感,就从老一辈传给了年轻一代。)可知,美籍华人从很小的时候对旧道德充满了崇敬,包括尊敬长辈和对家庭的责任感。故E项:This helps to explain why there is so little juvenile delinquency(青少年犯罪) among them(这有助于解释为什么其中青少年犯罪率如此之低。)是上文的结果,故选E。
【39题详解】
根据上文The high regard for education, which is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and the willingness to work very hard to gain advancement, are other noteworthy characteristics of theirs. This explains why so many descendants of uneducated laborers have succeeded in becoming doctors, lawyers, and other professionals(这就解释了为什么这么多没有受过教育的劳动者的后代成功地成为医生、律师和其他专业人士。)是上文内容的结果,故选C。
【40题详解】
根据空前的As American attitudes toward minorities and ethnic differences have changed in recent years(近年来,随着美国对少数民族和种族差异的态度有所改变),结合前文列举了华裔美国人的后代犯罪率低,努力进取,成为一些成功人士,故A项:the Chinese Americans have gained wide acceptance(美籍华人已得到了广泛的认可)是上文内容的结果,故选A。

Mrs. Peterson was my tenth-grade biology teacher a cool woman in her late twenties.
Hearing the unexpected news all of us immediately felt upset and missed Mrs. Peterson.

On the day of the tryout, she actually showed up for the competition. When we watched her in the audience, she shouted at us loudly," Come on, my Girls".
