The day following Thanksgiving ( https: / / www. / topic / Thanksgiving-Day ) — commonly referred to as Black Friday — has become one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the United States.
It is believed by many that the term Black Friday comes from the concept that businesses operate at a financial loss, or are “in the red,” until the day after Thanksgiving, when massive sales finally allow them to turn a profit, or put them “in the black.” However, this is untrue.
A more accurate explanation of the term dates back to the early 1960s, when police officers in Philadelphia began using the phrase “Black Friday” to describe the mess that resulted when large numbers of suburban tourists came into the city to begin their holiday shopping and, in some years, attend Saturday’s annual Army-Navy football game. The huge crowds created a headache for the police, who worked longer than usual as they dealt with traffic jams, accidents, shoplifting, and other issues.
Within a few years, the term Black Friday had taken root in Philadelphia. City businessmen attempted to put a prettier face on the day by calling it “Big Friday.”
In more recent years, Black Friday has been followed by other shopping holidays, including Small Business Saturday, which encourages shoppers to visit local retailers, and Cyber Monday, which promotes shopping online. Giving Tuesday has also appeared to encourage charitable donations.
Historically, Black Friday has yet another meaning ( https: / / www. / event / Black-Friday-1869 ), one unrelated to shopping. In 1869 Wall Street financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk attempted to corner (垄断) the nation’s gold market at the New York Gold Exchange. On Friday, September 24, the government’s control caused their plan to fall apart, making thousands of Americans lose all their money.
24. What is the origin of the term Black Friday
A. Stores offered limited cheaper specials on all kinds of goods.
B. Businesses made money, which was “in the black.”
C. Suburban tourists made the policemen’s work harder.
D. Friday became the biggest shopping day in America.
25. Why is Black Friday also called Big Friday
A. On this day businessmen make big money.
B. Customers buy a lot of goods this day.
C. City businessmen want to have prettier faces.
D. Businessmen want to make the day sound lovely.
26. What is the purpose of celebrating Giving Tuesday
A. To call on people to make some donations for charity.
B. To encourage shoppers to visit local retailers.
C. To boost the development of online shopping.
D. To improve the profits and make the economy better.
27. What can be the best title for the text
A. When Is Black Friday Celebrated
B. How Did Black Friday Get Its Name

On the outskirts of a tiny little town was a neglected (被忽视的) garden. In the garden stood an old house, and in that house lived Pippi Longstocking. She was nine years old, and she lived there all alone. She had no mother or father, which was actually quite nice, because it meant that no one could tell her that she had to go to bed just when she was having most fun. And no one could make her take cod liver oil when she would rather eat sweets.
Once upon a time Pippi did have a father whom she loved very much. And of course she once had a mother too, but that was so long ago that she couldn’t remember her at all. Her mother died when Pippi was a tiny little baby, lying in her cot and crying so terribly that no one could stand to come near. Pippi thought that her mother was now up in heaven, peering down at her daughter through a hole. Pippi would often wave to her and say, “Don’t worry! I can always look after myself!” But Pippi had not forgotten her father. He was a sea captain who sailed the great seas, and Pippi had sailed with him on his ship until one day a big storm blew him overboard and he disappeared. But Pippi was sure that one day he would come back. She didn’t believe that he had drowned (淹死). She believed that he had washed ashore on an island that was inhabited by natives and that her father had become king of them all. He walked around wearing a gold crown on his head all day long.
“My mamma is an angel, and my pappa is king of the natives. Not all children have such fine parents, let me tell you,” Pippi used to say with delight. “And as soon as my pappa builds himself a ship, he’ll come back to get me, and then I’ll be a native princess. Yippee, what fun that will be!” Many years ago her father had bought the old house that stood in the garden. He had planned to live there with Pippi when he grew old and was no longer able to sail the seas. Then, unfortunately, he was blown overboard. While Pippi was waiting for him to come back, she headed straight home to Villa Villekulla. That was what the house was called. It stood there, all furnished and ready — just waiting for her to arrive.
28. Where was Villa Villekulla
A. It was in a garden. B. It was on the sea.
C. It was on an island. D. It was in the heaven.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 2
A. Pippi missed her parents very much.
B. Pippi’s parents died when Pippi was a baby.
C. Pippi was with her father when he fell into the sea.
D. Pippi’s father became king of the natives on an island.
30. Which of the following was most possible to happen
A. Pippi would become a princess.
B. Pippi’s father would come back to get her.
C. Pippi would live happily with her father.
D. Pippi would grow up without her parents.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Pippi
A. Naughty but clever. B. Rich but mean.
C. Imaginative but proud. D. Unlucky but optimistic.

Going vegan or vegetarian is one way to decrease your diet’s impact on greenhouse gas emissions (排放) — but it isn’t the only way. A recent Purdue University study ( https: / / pubs.acs.org / doi / 10.1021 / acs.est.1c02658" \t "_blank ) suggests that smaller changes can make a difference too, while improving your health.
After analyzing the 2010 grocery purchases of more than 57,000 U.S. families, Purdue researchers found 71 percent could reduce their food carbon footprint by making some changes. One is to skip the unhealthy snacks. Avoiding foods with high calorie is important and low nutritional value can reduce the total carbon footprint of U.S. family food consumption by nearly 10 percent. Items like candy, soda, and packaged snacks take more ingredients and more processing, which translates to higher environmental impacts.
Another effective way to reduce your carbon emissions is to avoid bulk buys. Households of one or two people may end up with food waste when they try to save money with bulk buys. Before you buy supersize, consider whether a three-pound jar of peanut butter will go bad before it’s used up.
The researchers of the study also suggest consuming fewer ready-made foods. One average microwave meal may not have a very large carbon footprint. But buying them regularly can add up to high emissions because ready-made foods are sold in large quantities, which makes their carbon footprint significant, the study found.
By making the above changes, the U.S. could cut more than a quarter of emissions from household food consumption, the researchers say. That’s about 36 million metric tons — about what 6.6 million households generate in a year of electricity use. “Collective action can make a huge impact,” says study co-author Hua Cai.
32. Why does the author mention being a vegetarian in Paragraph 1
A. To encourage us to become vegetarians.
B. To introduce the findings of a recent study.
C. To illustrate the impact of greenhouse gas emission.
D. To tell readers it’s not a good way to help the environment.
33. How many methods are suggested by the study to reduce our food carbon footprint
A. Two. B. Three.
C. Four. D. Five.
34. What do the underlined words “bulk buys” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Buying things in quantity.
B. Buying things of low quality.
C. Buying things out of date.
D. Buying things of low price.
35. What might Hua Cai mean by saying “Collective action can make a huge impact”
A. We should collect some materials to make a difference.
B. We should take measures quickly to make a difference.
C. We should make efforts together to make a difference.
D. We should avoid all unhealthy food to make a difference.

范文:
Last weekend, aiming to celebrate the coming of the new year, a dumpling-making activity was held in the dining hall of our school.
Almost all the students from three grades participated in the activity. In the beginning, the headmaster came to deliver a short speech, through which he explained the significance of the activity and expressed his best wishes. After that, with the help of some cooks, the students started making dumplings. Although not skilled, they still enjoyed the work a lot. The highlight came when the dumplings were served. Eating food made by themselves, all the students felt happy and satisfied.
Eating dumplings is a typical Chinese tradition. Thus, this activity is of great importance because it not only enriches students’ school life, but also enhances their awareness of traditional Chinese culture.
评分标准
应用文写作:
一、总体评分原则:评分时,先根据文章所表达的内容和语言质量初步确定其所属档次,然后以该档次的要求来衡量,确定或调整档次,最后给分。
二、评分时,文章应包括以下三个要点:
1.活动目的(内容合理,语言表达清楚准确有逻辑,计5分);
2.活动过程(内容合理,语言表达清楚准确有逻辑,计10分);

W: Hi, everyone! Welcome to Mount Raven, the most popular ski place in the state.
I’m Jessie Williams, and this is our weekend weather report. This morning we’re seeing sun with cloudy periods as well as a few hours of light snowfall. Right now I am at the top of Mount Raven where the temperature is plus two and expected to rise to about six degrees by noon. Overnight temperature will probably drop to at least minus seven. Tomorrow’s forecast. With the wind chill factor, that could put us at a record low of minus twenty. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but if you’re determined to head out to the slopes tomorrow, please remember to put on warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold, especially exposed areas like your ears, cheeks and hands. Now, we have to go back to the newsroom for a look at what’s happening in sports. Have a splendid weekend!
