Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

One evening in 2014, feeling bored, Paul O’Sullivan from Baltimore went to Face book to find out just how many others on the social network shared his name. Moments later, Paul O’Sullivan had many name twins from around the world filling his screen. He decided to send friend requests (请求) to them all.
Many Paul O’Sullivans paid little attention to him, but a few took up his invitation. “My first thought was ‘Who is this guy and what does he want from me ’” says Paul O’Sullivan from Rotterdam, the Netherlands — now known as Rotterdam Paul.
Baltimore Paul noticed something four of them had in common: They were all musicians. He had an idea. Wouldn’t it be funny if they formed a band (乐队) called The Paul O’Sullivans They all agreed.
Starting a band across several time zones means a lot of problems, like shaky Wi-Fi and other technical difficulties. To fix this, they came up with a special idea. Baltimore Paul and Rotterdam Paul record a basic track (音轨), then e-mail it to Manchester Paul. Once Manchester Paul records a bass track, he e-mails it buck to Baltimore Paul, who then builds it into the main song. Later, Pennsylvania Paul adds the drumbeat. Round and round the track goes until they achieve the sound they want.
The Paul O’Sullivan Band released (发布) its first song, “Namesake,” in March 2016. It’s a cheerful song about long-distance friendships:
But just months after the song’s release, Baltimore Paul began experiencing health problems that forced him to stop making music. The other Pauls decided to take a break too — from the band.
But they didn’t stop their friendship. The other Pauls made sure Baltimore Paul never felt alone. They often shared family pictures and talked online.
Four years later, Baltimore Paul was well enough to start making music again. But now their international connection took on new meaning. “Writing a song with someone across the world makes you feel less trapped (困住) and less unhappy because of COVID-19,” says Baltimore Paul.
8. How did Rotterdam Paul feel about Baltimore Paul’s request at first
A. Curious. B. Excited. C. Nervous. D. Annoyed.
9. How did the Pauls record their first song
A. By recording their song at the same time online.
B. By getting together and recording a small part each time.
C. By making a piece of music and adding their tracks separately.
D. By inventing new technology allowing them to record together.
10. Why did the Pauls stop making music after their first song
A. One of them was ill. B. One of them was too busy.
C. They wanted to change their style. D. They found it hard to work online.
11. What does the Pauls’ international connection bring to them now
A. Wealth. B. Comfort. C. Many concerts. D. More friendships.

High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view(视野)of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students performance, said William Sullivan head of the research team. It’s a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ ll do better on tests.”Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy(政策)changes. Changes in school design, for example“would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today ,Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools Students were randomly assigned(随机分配)to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of(一连串)numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view ,Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning. For example planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation, or they can plant many trees on the site;architects( 建筑师) can design classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces.
12. What did the study find out about high school students
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
13. What does the underlined word“ significant”in paragraph 2 mean
A. Traditional. B. Important. C. Necessary. D. Early.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How the study was carried out. B. Why the study was different.
C. The purpose of the study . D. The result of the study.
15. What do the researchers think of the study
A. It has drawn public attention to education.
B. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
D. It needs more support from high school teachers.
