Geoffrey Everest Hinton is a British-Canadian cognitive (认知的) psychologist and computer scientist. In May 2023, Hinton announced his leaving from Google to be able to “freely speak out about the risks of AI”. Hinton’s work on neural networks—the method that teaches AI to process data in a way similar to the human brain—supports how modern chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard function. But now, he partly regrets making this advancement.
Hinton has been working on neural networks since he was a graduate student at the University of Edinburgh in the 1970s. Then few researchers believed in the idea. Even Hinton’s PhD advisor had his doubts. “We met once a week,” Hinton said. “Sometimes it ended in a shouting match.”
But Hinton persisted with his work. In the 1980s, he and his colleagues put forward a technique called backpropagation—an algorithm (算法) for training machines. In 2012, he had a big breakthrough: Hinton and two of his students created a neural network that could analyze photos and teach itself to identify objects. The next year, the team’s neural network startup was bought by Google, where Hinton continued to work.
For years, Hinton believed neural networks were not as good as the way human brains function, but he’s recently started thinking differently. He once thought it would take up to 50 years for the technology to outsmart humans, but he now predicts it’ll be just 5 to 20. Hinton’s immediate concerns are that fake text, pictures and videos produced by AI will make regular people unable to distinguish them from reality. Eventually, this technology could be used by humans to influence public opinion. He believes that AI could avoid its limits and begin making people do what it wants by learning how humans control or influence others.
However, Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist who won the 2018 Turing Award with Hinton, has a different opinion. “I believe that intelligent machines will lead to a new renaissance (复兴) for humanity, a new era of enlightenment,” LeCun said.
24. What can we know about Geoffrey Everest Hinton
A. He struggled a lot at Google before leaving. B. He showed little interest in AI at college.
C. He prides himself on his achievements in AI. D. He contributes a lot to the development of AI.
25. What does the underlined part “persisted with” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Put aside. B. Showed off. C. Stuck to. D. Jumped at.
26. What would happen to AI in the future according to Hinton
A. It might control humans. B. It might make humans quick thinkers.
C. It will better protect people’s privacy. D. It will need technological breakthroughs.
27. What is Yann LeCun’s attitude towards AI in the future
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Contradictory.

Antarctica is the coldest continent, so what is the coldest city in the world That honor belongs to the Russian city of Yakutsk. Located in Siberia, one of the world’s coldest and most poorly populated regions, Yakutsk is home to around 336,200 people, many of whom work for Alrosa, a company that runs a diamond mine in the city. Temperatures in Yakutsk have reached minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 60 degrees Celsius). Some residents insist they have experienced much colder days, but they have been unable to prove it because the thermometer (温度计) only reads down as far as -63℃ (minus 81.4℉), according to an interview by the BBC.
However, while Yakutsk is the coldest city, there are other, less-populous permanently inhabited places that are even more freezing. Oymyakon, a Russian settlement of around 500 people, reached a frosty minus 96.2℉ (minus 71.2℃) in 1924. Somewhat surprisingly, Yakutsk and Oymyakon aren’t that close to each other. They are separated by 577 miles (928 kilometers), and a drive from one to the other would take around 21 hours.
So why are these two places so bone-chilling
“Siberia is so cold due to a combination of high latitude and it being such a large land mass,” said Alex DeCaria, a meteorology professor at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Global temperature extremes—both high and low—tend to occur over continents because land heats up and cools down faster than the oceans do. In the case of Siberia, snow and ice cover also play a role, as they help keep the region cool by reflecting the incoming solar radiation back into space. This combination of factors has led to the creation of a large, semi-permanent high-pressure zone forming over Siberia in the winter, known as the “Siberian High”, which results in very cold surface temperatures.
With specific reference to the conditions in Yakutsk and Oymyakon, topography (地形学) also plays a part. “These places are in local valleys. Oymyakon, in particular, is surrounded by relatively high mountain ranges,” explained Jouni Raisanen, a senior lecturer at the University of Helsinki in Finland. “The so-called ‘cold air lakes’ easily form under calm winter conditions. These pockets of cold, relatively ‘heavy’ air can become trapped close to the valley bottom, which helps to shelter the cold air lakes from mixing with warmer air,” Raisanen noted.
28. Why couldn’t Yakutsk residents prove temperature there can be much lower than minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit
A. Because there is no weather report in the area. B. Because they can’t afford the tools to measure temperature.
C. Because thermometers can’t stand the coldness. D. Because the temperature is beyond the thermometer’s limit.
29. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Oymyakon
A. It is situated not far from Yakutsk.
B. It is a place even colder than Yakutsk.
C. There is no people to permanently live there.
D. Most people there work for a company that runs a diamond mine.
30. What contributes to Siberia’s coldness according to the text
a. Its high latitude. b. Snow and ice cover.
c. Its large and vast land. d. Its position far from the continent.
A. abc B. abd C. bed D. acd
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. Why Siberia is so cold.
B. What the coldest city in the world is.
C. How people live in the cold places.
D. What the coldest inhabited places are and why they are so cold.

Movies for kids and teens aren’t only designed to entertain. They can also include messages about what’s right and wrong, what actions make a hero or bad guy, and how to deal with moral challenges. Consider The Hate U Give, a movie that deals with how teens can use their voice against racialized gun violence. Or WALL-E, which contains messages about environmental destruction and consumerism.
But do children and teens want to watch movies containing lessons about moral behavior Researchers at UCLA explored the question in a recent report. They analyzed over 1,700 movies for children and teens released in theaters after 2010 to see how many character strengths were featured in each film. The quality and success of the films were measured in different ways: how many stars each movie received, how much money each movie made in ticket sales during the opening weekend, and audience and film critic scores.
The results Movies that noticeably featured character strengths tended to make more money on the opening weekend both within the United States and internationally compared to movies without character strengths: This was true even when the researchers accounted for how many stars the film received, and the audience and critic scores, so their success wasn’t just about being better-quality movies.
Qualities like perseverance, courage, and teamwork were featured most often (in over 300 films each). But qualities like humility (谦逊) and integrity (正直) were less commonly highlighted (in fewer than 100 films each). “These are the character strengths that children struggle with the most, and so creators may be missing an opportunity to help children where they need it most,” explain the researchers. The report also found movies made for 13- to 18-year-olds had fewer character strengths compared to movies for younger children.
“Teens are at a critical stage where they are easily influenced by their social environments, including media,” explain the researchers. “There is a clear gap in the industry for content directed at teens that promotes positive character strengths to help youth so they can better deal with the key challenges and changes they are experiencing.”
32. What do The Hate U Give and WALL-E have in common
A. Both intend to criticize racism. B. Both are likely to develop values.
C. Both focus on environmental issues. D. Both are mainly designed to entertain.
33. What did the report find about the movies featuring character strengths
A. They received more negative film reviews. B. They got lower audience and critic scores.
C. They gained impressive ticket sales. D. They were mainly targeted at overseas audience.
34. What can we learn about the quality “integrity”
A. It brought success to over 300 films. B. It needs to be emphasized in more films.
C. It is a character familiar to most children. D. It was featured more in films for younger children.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Are Movies with Moral Lessons Popular
B. Does the Film Industry Fail Its Young Audience
C. What Can Children Learn from Watching Movies
D. Are Films for Teens Different from Films for Young Children

Always develop a sense of curiosity, and observe the world from different angles, which will facilitate your development. 38 Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.
39
You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day; you must develop a thirst for knowledge. Take new classes, read books, listen to educational podcasts, and the list goes on and on. If something confuses you, surf the Internet and clear out your problems. 40 In the end, you will be able to tackle a problem from different angles, making everything easier.
Hence, when things get really intense and wild out there, you can always rely on your wisdom to make the best choices.

Frugality Is Back In Fashion
“If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” This is a piece of advice from Warren Buffet, a great financial mind of the 21st century. Many young people today appear to be taking these words very much to heart, 56 (especial) in the present economic climate.
While the idea of being frugal (节俭的) has long been a part of Eastern culture, the relatively recent growth of wealth in China as well as the case of purchasing 57 (lead) to increased consumerism for many across the country. Not only are businesses today offering 58 more diverse range of products, but Internet algorithms are also matching our shopping patterns to big data sets—both of which are meant 59 (persuade) people into buying more stuff than they need. Yet this increased consumption of goods has been pushing up the prices of certain bare essentials such as housing, transportation and food, 60 (force) people to reevaluate their priorities while spending money. It is no wonder that being thrifty is once again becoming a dominant trend 61 young people.
Despite the annoyances 62 (cause) by algorithms, the Internet is flooded with advice on where one can save money as well as good opinions about how they should spend their money. 63 makes sense to prioritize goods and services which directly affect your health and well-being, while limiting those 64 are fancy, but not entirely necessary.
Hopefully, we all fully understand at this point that the resources on this planet are indeed limited. The choice to be frugal is not only good for one’s wallet, but also 65 (benefit) to the planet in the long run.

The two became good friends quickly, and Steven also befriended Marilyn’s daughter, Izabelle Major. The little girl used to give Steven a high five with so much joy, energy and excitement every time she saw him, and Steven was always excited to see her, too.
Eventually, Marilyn left the company for some reason. However, a few weeks ago, Steven ran into Marilyn and Izabelle at a restaurant. He was about to say hello to them when he noticed something unusual. Marilyn looked preoccupied (心事重重), As for Izabelle, she wore a hat and looked very weak. Steven could tell something was wrong but he didn’t talk with them about it that night in order not to upset them.
Steven waited and then called Marilyn the next day. Marilyn told him sadly that Izabelle was suffering from a serious, disease. She had to undergo painful treatments at Hasbro Children’s Hospital every Monday and take, medicine every day. Knowing that, Steven felt heartbroken. 32. B。根据第一段中的“Consider The Hate U Give, a movie that deals with how teens can use their voice against racialized gun violence. Or WALL-E, which contains messages about environmental destruction and consumerism.”
33. C。根据第三段中的“Movies that noticeably featured character strengths tended to make more money on opening weekend both within the United States and internationally compared to movies without character strengths.”
34. B。根据第四段中的“But qualities like humility (谦逊) and integrity (正直) were less commonly highlighted (in fewer than 100 films each). ‘These are the character strengths that children struggle with the most, and so creators may be missing an opportunity to help children where they need it most,’ explain the researchers. The report also found movies made for 13- to 18-year-olds had fewer character strengths compared to movies for younger children.”
35. A。 故选A。

56. especially。 副词修饰介词短语in the present economic climate。故填especially。
57. has led。 分析句子结构可知,此处为谓语动词,根据句意和时间状语for many across the country可知,此处应表示对现在造成的影响,所以使用现在完成时,与句子主语“the relatively recent growth of wealth in China as well as the ease of purchasing”之间为主动关系,且as well as连接主语时,谓语动词形式取决于前者,所以主语核心部分为名词单数。故填has led。
58. a。 故填a。
59. to persuade。 both of which引导定语从句,which指代主句not only…, but also…
60. forcing。 句子的谓语动词为has been pushing up,此处为非谓语动词作状语,force与其逻辑主语“this increased consumption of goods”之间为主动关系,所以使用现在分词形式。故填forcing。
61. among/for。
62. caused。

Sport Benefits Me A Lot
Sport plays an essential role in our lives. As for me, it benefits me in the following aspects.
First, it teaches me character. By doing sport, I become strong, determined, brave and persistent. Second, it teaches me to play by the rules. It is necessary and fair for me to obey rules when I get involved in sport competitions. Finally, it teaches me to know what it feels like to win and lose. Winning does provide me with pride and confidence while losing helps me to face failure and frustration in a correct way.
To sum up, sport does me good both physically and mentally, which enables me to live a full life.

People seeing the post started to offer help in various ways. Some donated money and dog necessities. Two of Steven’s business partners in Florida thought a golden retriever puppy was perfect for Izabelle and they wanted to get one from their friend for Izabelle. Steven’s friend, Cynthia, took the trouble to fly to Florida and bring it back to Rhode Island so that Izabelle could have that dog as soon as possible. With the help of the community, Steven also raised $1,000 for Izabelle so she could buy the dog whatever it needed for its new home.
Soon, Izabelle met the little dog, her new friend. Deeply touched by what Steven and others had done for her, Izabelle burst into tears, and so did her mom Marilyn. From then on, Izabelle and the dog became inseparable. The dog always accompanied her and played with her. It took Izabelle’s mind off bad things and also reminded her that there were always people with her whatever difficulties she was faced with. What’s more inspiring was that Izabelle’s health condition was improving steadily. Love can indeed work miracles.

W: Well, it might be an adventure novel.
M: I think you are right.
W: Let me look it up. It might be on our database … Well, he has quite a few books published. There is one titled Gwendy’s Final Task, and it was published at the beginning of this year.

W: Mr. Stenson, I think you need to replace corn with another plant in your fields. (8)

W: I didn’t go anywhere this summer. My mother helped me sign up for some online classes. (10)

W: Thanks. Well, if you are interested, I’d like to introduce you to the program.
M: Of course, I am. How does it work
W: The program offers beginners’ courses at $300, intermediate classes at $500 and advanced ones at $600. (11) The teacher will test your Chinese before deciding which class to put you in.

Text 9
W: What’s the weather like today Have you listened to the forecast
M: Yes. The weatherman said it’ll be sunny in the morning and there will be a shower in the afternoon. (13) I met an old Irish farmer recently. (14) He said he needn’t listen to the forecast. He can predict the weather by observing birds and other animals.
W: Really And how does that work
M: Well, he said that the nesting of birds can show both long-term and short-term weather patterns. He said that some birds, like magpies, build their nests lower if there are expected storms in summer, and higher if the weather is going to be fine, regardless of what the nests look like. (14) This would be a long-term prediction.
W: How does he know this
M: He learned it from his father and grandfather. Predicting the weather is very important for farmers, of course. (15)
W: And what about short-term predictions
M: Well, according to him, when cattle lie down in the fields instead of walking around and eating grass, it will rain that day. (16)
W: Wow, I’ve never heard those before. It’s interesting to learn some ways to predict the weather.

W: Almost every year, I start the New Year with a set of resolutions that I’m determined to keep. The results, as you can guess, have been variable.
Last year, I reached my fitness goal of running for forty minutes each day. (17) But I didn’t achieve my aim of spending less time on social media. According to my weekly screen-time reports, I still spent between two and three hours each day on my phone.
I’m not alone in starting the new year with a plan for self-improvement. Around a quarter of people in the world make at least one New Year resolution. (18) But fifty percent of the good intentions end in disappointment.
For those who don’t follow this tradition like my brother John, creating a New Year resolution may seem illogical. In his opinion, January 1st should be no better than any other day in a year to make a life change. So, why on earth do people put the needless pressure on themselves at the beginning of a year (19)
However, recent psychological research suggests that there are many reasons for beginning a new rule on the first day of a new year. After understanding those reasons, we can all increase our chances of sticking to our new goals for a new year…
