Graduation is a significant milestone for everyone. An 89-year-old man called Rene Neira had been trying to finish a degree since the 1950s. However, in the 1960s, he was so passionate about urban and economic development of the southside of San Antonio that he stopped school and got involved with the local government. From that time, one of his life goals was to earn a degree in economics. In 2017, the grandpa and his 19-year-old granddaughter both enrolled (入学) at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
“There were times when we would get lunch together, be in the library together, and just work silently side-by-side,” Melanie Salazar, Rene’s granddaughter, recalled. “He always had something to say, especially if his professors had different opinions than him,” Melanie said. “And there were often times when a professor would invite him to talk about the past.”
Rene’s college years weren’t easy. “He has worked very hard over time. Especially in recent years, with hearing loss and going through seasons of not having a car, there was a term where he had to take medical leave because he had a stroke, so he couldn’t go back to school that term. And then the pandemic started,” said Melanie.
After four years, their hard work finally paid off—they graduated. Together, they stood on the stage. Everyone broke into applause and cheered for this fantastic pair.
Their story has been making waves online. People have nothing but good words for them, “Awww... I love stories like this. This was such a beautiful moment. Congratulations to both of them. Grandpa definitely demonstrated that one shouldn’t give up their dream no matter how long it takes,” one wrote. Another wrote, “I’m motivated to go back to school myself, thanks to his example.”
Rene had the determination to finish his degree even at an advanced stage in his life. Hard work, patience, and determination are the keys to success, especially when the path is not easy or clear.
24. Why did Rene fail to get a degree when he was young
A. He was not interested in university life then.

C. It was smooth and plain. D. It came with challenges.

Humans have long known that being in nature is good for the mind and body. From indigenous (本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it
There is no doubt that being in nature reduces the physiological symptoms of stress in our bodies. What this means is that we are less likely to be anxious and fearful in nature, and therefore we can be more open to other people and creative patterns of thought. Also, nature often leads to awe, wonder and respect, all these emotions facilitating everything from physical to mental health. There is also some evidence that exposure to nature impacts the brain. Viewing natural beauty makes specific reward circuits in the brain associated with dopamine release, a chemical that gives us a sense of purpose, joy and energy to pursue our goals.
But, regrettably, people seem to be spending less time outdoors and less time in nature than before. It is also clear that, in the past 30 years, people’s levels of stress and sense of “busyness” have risen dramatically. These joint forces have led environmental writer Richard Louv to coin the term “Nature Deficit Disorder”—a form of suffering that comes from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers.
Perhaps we should take note and try a course corrective. The 19th century philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote about nature, “There I feel that nothing can befall me in life—no disgrace, no calamity.” The science speaks to Emerson’s intuition. It’s time to realize that nature is more than just a material resource. It’s also a pathway to human health and happiness.
28. Why are “indigenous adolescents” and “modern East Asian cultures” mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To clarify a viewpoint. B. To answer the question below.
C. To present the natural scenery. D. To show the cultural differences.
29. What does the underlined word “facilitating” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Restricting. B. Exposing. C. Promoting. D. Covering.
30. What is the tone of the author in writing paragraph 3
A. Uneasy. B. Indifferent. C. Humorous. D. Proud.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Is It Time to Challenge Yourself in Nature
B. Do You Know Nature Is a Material Resource
C. Why Do We Care about the Natural Environment
D. What Can Happen When We Connect with Nature
D
Vaccination(接种疫苗)is among the most effective ways to help us prevent diseases. For viruses that don't change too much-the measles virus(麻疹病毒) for example—getting vaccinated is a once-and-for-all method to prevent you from becoming infected with the virus. If you had two measles vaccines when you were a child, you will be protected for life.
However, it's a different story when it comes to influenza(流行性感冒), commonly known as "the flu", which generally peaks between December and February. Flu vaccines cannot protect us in the long term.
There is no long-term immunity(免疫), according to Theodore Strange, associate medical director at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. "The virus essentially 'changes its coat'—HIN1, H2N3, and so on," he told the website Healthline.
Apart from a person's immune protection from flu vaccination declining over time, flu viruses are also constantly changing. So the vaccines are likely to be updated from one season to the next to protect against the viruses that research suggests may be the most common during the upcoming flu season.
Thus, to develop effective flu vaccines, over 100 national influenza centers around the world conduct year-round surveillance(监测)for influenza. Researchers will test thousands of influenza virus samples from patients, according to the official website of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). The World Health Organization also suggests there are three or four influenza viruses that are most likely to spread among people during the upcoming flu season.
But even when a vaccine is developed, getting it can prove to be difficult, as it is in high demand and short supply. The timing of influenza vaccine production and distribution is unpredictable, thus the availability of the flu vaccine supply does not always coincide with(与……一致)peak demand.
So scientists prioritize(划分优先顺序)access to the vaccination. The CDC recommends key populations, such as medical staff, teachers, students, children and those aged 60 and above, receive flu vaccines.
This year the situation seems more complicated, as the upcoming flu season coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic. This could overwhelm hospitals, straining(过度使用)resources and healthcare workers' time.
32. What do we know about influenza
A. Influenza viruses are continuously changing.
B. It commonly peaks between November and December.
C. Getting two flu vaccines can protect people against the viruses.
D. HINI and H2N3 are the most easily infectious flu viruses.
33. What do researchers do in order to develop effective flu vaccines
A. They update vaccines once a year.
B. They monitor the flu throughout the year.
C. They focus on one or two viruses during a period.
D. Influenza centers worldwide share virus samples from patients.
34. Why do scientists prioritize access to the vaccination
A. Because not all people can afford it.
B. Because some people refuse to get vaccinated.
C. Because the vaccine is not safe for everyone.
D. Because the vaccine doesn't always meet the demand.
35. What does the author think of the upcoming flu season
A. It could be more challenging than ever for medical workers.
B. Enough resources have been prepared to cope with it.
C. Flu vaccines will be provided for the public in November.
D. The flu vaccines are expected to help prevent COVID-19.

A 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据第一段“Humans have long known that being in nature is good for the mind and body. From indigenous(本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it ”(人类早就知道身处大自然对身心都有好处。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“There is no doubt that being in nature reduces the physiological symptoms of stress in our bodies.”(毫无疑问,在大自然中可以减少我们身体中压力的生理症状。)以及“There is also some evidence that exposure to nature impacts the brain.”(还有一些证据表明,接触大自然会影响大脑。)
根据第三段“But, regrettably, people seem to be spending less time outdoors and less time in nature than before. It is also clear that, in the past 30 years, people’s levels of stress and sense of “busyness” have risen dramatically. These joint forces have led environmental writer Richard Louv to coin the term “Nature Deficit Disorder”—a form of suffering that comes from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers.”(但是,令人遗憾的是,人们花在户外和大自然中的时间似乎比以前少了。 故选A项。
根据文章大意以及第一段中“From indigenous(本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it ”(从在野外完成成人仪式的土著青少年到现代东亚文化中的“森林浴”,许多人都将大自然视为治愈和个人成长的地方。

Vaccination(接种疫苗)is among the most effective ways to help us prevent diseases. For viruses that don't change too much-the measles virus(麻疹病毒), for example—getting vaccinated is a once-and-for-all method to prevent you from becoming infected with the virus.
A 33. B 34. D 35. A

由第五段中的“Thus, to develop effective flu vaccines, over 100 national influenza centers around the world conduct year-round surveillance(监测)for influenza.”(因此,为了研制有效的流感疫苗,全世界100多个国家流感中心对流感进行了全年监测。)
由倒数第三段“But even when a vaccine is developed, getting it can prove to be difficult, as it is in high demand and short supply. The timing of influenza vaccine production and distribution is unpredictable, thus the availability of the flu vaccine supply does not always coincide with(与……一致)peak demand.”(但是,即使研制出疫苗,也很难获得疫苗,因为疫苗的需求量很大,而且供不应求。流感疫苗生产和分发的时间是不可预测的,因此流感疫苗供应的可获得性并不总是与高峰需求相吻合。)和倒数第二段中的“So scientists prioritize(划分优先顺序)access to the vaccination.”(所以科学家们优先考虑接种疫苗。)
由最后一段“This year the situation seems more complicated, as the upcoming flu season coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic. This could overwhelm hospitals, straining(过度使用)resources and healthcare workers' time.”(今年的情况似乎更加复杂,因为即将到来的流感季节恰逢新型冠状病毒肺炎大流行。 故选A项。
