My name is Michelle Rogers. For most of my life I had been fighting with my body weight. I was either gaining weight or trying to lose it. I wasn’t happy with myself, and I certainly wasn’t able to fully enjoy life. Not only did I feel bad physically, but I felt terrible emotionally. I also knew I wasn’t able to be the best I could be, and with failure after failure in losing weight, I just felt so hopeless to make it.
One day in 2008, I was looking through ads online and saw a treadmill (跑步机) for $100. This time I decided to start small and keep it doable. The first week I started walking 15 minutes on the treadmill at a fixed time every day. The next week I did 16 minutes. Each week I added a minute. Gradually, I increased speed as well as time. Once I got to 30 minutes, the weight started dropping off.
I didn’t lose weight at first, but I didn’t give up like I did in the past. I realized I started feeling better. My legs were getting stronger. I didn’t feel painful like I used to when I got up from my desk. All the efforts I’d been putting into fitness made me want to start eating healthier, too. I began with small changes as well. After these years I started listening to my body. It was refusing food and habits that were bad for me.
Today the extra weight is gone. I still exercise every morning. I look and feel the best I have never done. Every area of my life has improved and benefited from this change in me. Not only do I have my youthful energy, looks and health back, but also I have more confidence than I have ever had.
8. How did Michelle feel about losing weight before 2008
A. Confident. B. Hopeless. C. Addicted. D. Annoyed.
9. How many weeks had passed before Michelle’s weight began dropping
A. 15 weeks. B. 20 weeks. C. 25 weeks. D. 30 weeks.
10. What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A. Life. B. Health C. The treadmill D. The body
11. What can we learn from Michelle’s story
A. Time is everything. B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Start with small things. D. Nothing is more important than confidence.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

When 45-year-old Randy Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic(胰腺) cancer, he chose to focus on living rather than dying. As a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pausch was asked to deliver a “last lecture”. This well-known campus tradition allowed professors to share worldly wisdom with students as if they were dying and had one last lecture to give.
The only difference in Pausch’s case is that Pausch really was dying, but it only motivated him more. He delivered his last lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” on Sept. 18, 2007.
Pausch began by sharing several of his boyhood dreams, some of which he had achieved and the others he hadn’t. He described the importance of having dreams and how anyone can still learn a lot by reaching for those dreams, even if they don’t always succeed. He shared the values(价值观) learned through experience, which he hoped to pass on to others hard work, laughter and gratitude, honesty, character.
Pausch’s last lecture received a great deal of praise and attention. It became a crazy YouTube hit, and in October 2007, he presented an abridged (删节的) version on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. He turned the lecture into a book by the same name, which quickly became a best-seller. Readers were deeply moved by the book’s representation of Pausch’s lifelong philosophy and the way it revealed the biggest source of his motivation—his three young children.
Pausch passed away on July 25, 2008, but his voice lives on in the recorded lecture and his book. He continues to motivate us all by encouraging us to never give up our childhood dreams—a source of inspiration that can never run dry.
12. Why was Pausch asked to give his “last lecture”
A. To teach the students. B. To make him have a better life.
C. To cure his cancer. D. To achieve his dream.
13. What was Pausch’s lecture mainly about
A. His private life in boyhood. B. Having dreams and good values.
C. The reason for his success. D. The experience learned from others.
14. Which of the following motivated Pausch most
A. His dreams. B. His children. C. His work. D. His students.
15. The purpose of the passage is to inspire people to ________.
A. keep on dreaming B. know the meaning of life
C. enjoy life D. give the last lecture

【13题详解】

My name is Michelle Rogers. For most of my life I had been fighting with my body weight. I was either gaining weight or trying to lose it. I wasn’t happy with myself, and I certainly wasn’t able to fully enjoy life. Not only did I feel bad physically, but I felt terrible emotionally. I also knew I wasn’t able to be the best I could be, and with failure after failure in losing weight, I just felt so hopeless to make it.
One day in 2008 I was looking through ads online and saw a treadmill (跑步机) for $100.
Today, the extra weight is gone. I still exercise every morning. I look and feel the best I have never done. Every area of my life has improved and benefited from this change in me. Not only do I have my youthful energy, looks and health back, but also I have more confidence than I have ever had.

A. 15 weeks. B. 20 weeks. C. 25 weeks. D. 30 weeks.
10. What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A. Life. B. Health C. The treadmill D. The body
11. What can we learn from Michelle’s story
A. Time is everything. B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Start with small things. D. Nothing is more important than confidence.
