Most Famous Paintings in the World
Among the millions of paintings that are created and shown in galleries and museums all
around the world, a very small number go beyond time and make history. Below are some
examples.
The Persistence of Memory—Salvador Dali. Painted in 1931, The Persistence of Memory is
one of the most splendid pieces in art history. This work is known to make people reflect on their
way of life and the way they spend their time, and it is also thought that Albert Einstein’s famous
Theory of Relativity gave Dali the idea for this wonderful painting.
Girl with a Pearl Earring—Johannes Vermeer. Considered by many to be “the Dutch Mona
Lisa”, this beautiful painting features an unnamed young woman looking over her shoulder to
stare directly at the viewer. It was completed in 1665 and is exhibited in the Mauritshuis in The
Hague, the Netherlands.
Guernica—Pablo Picasso. The famous painting by Picasso was completed in 1937. It was

Nirvaan Agarwal found out early how powerful a kid’s voice can be. He was taking part in a
protest against the mistreatment of animals at a local circus (马戏团) when he was 3 years old. “I
passed out almost half copies of brochures,” Nirvaan told TIME for Kids. “People kept taking them
from me because I was a little kid.”
Since then, Nirvaan, now 12, has been speaking out on a range of issues affecting animals,
from their use in the fur industry to horse racing. That commitment shows in his personal life, too.
He’s a vegan, which means he doesn’t eat food that comes from animals. He says, “It’s important to
make a voice for animals because they can’t speak for themselves.” In the meantime, Nirvaan
encourages other kids who care about animals to take action. “It’s never too early to help animals,”
he says.
In 2022, he spoke before county officials in his hometown of Edison, New Jersey, relaying
animal advocates’ concerns about the Johnson Park zoo, in Piscataway, which was always hit by
flood, threatening the animals’ life. Nirvaan got results. Months later, it was finally closed and the
animals were moved to shelters. Later that year, Nirvaan was recognized for his work by the
animal-rights organization PETA Kids. He was named one of its Kids’ All-Star for Animals. The
honor gave him a new viewpoint on his duty. “It makes me feel like I have the power to do
something,” he says, “I feel like I can change the world.”
Even with all of his accomplishments, Nirvaan has big plans for the future. He says, “Ending
the mistreatment of animals happens one step at a time. You can slowly break down the pillars (柱
子) of a structure. Eventually, when you break down all of those pillars, the whole structure falls.”
He hopes to be a chef and create vegan recipes someday.
24. What do we know about Nirvaan when he was 3 years old
A. He protested against printing brochures. B. He used to go to circus animal shows.
C. He learned a way to be liked by adults. D. He was involved in significant things.

Young adults often have a lot to learn in school. However, occasionally, the life skills needed
for them to become successful outside of school aren’t learned. This may be why the years after
high school can sometimes be the most uneasy and tense times for young adults.
Some may say that life skills are to be taught by their household rather than school, but that’s
not exactly true. Some students don’t have a parent figure to teach them the necessary moral
lessons needed and habitually rely on school to propound them with this essential knowledge. This
is why courses of life skills should be set up in schools.
Over the course of history, students generally go to an educational institution of some sort to
find themselves spending their entire time learning math and science, instead of what is required
for real world-communication, which is through behavior and manners. Manners are important
when having a conversation with family, friends, teachers perhaps or even employers. Schools
should find a way to teach manners as a way for students to have respect and be open-minded
when it comes to other individuals.
In addition, the handling of finances is one of the major life skills for students. For people,
especially young people, to survive in today’s financial environment, knowledge of personal
finance is a necessity. For example, schools educating students about building credit scores and
keeping up with a credit card is helpful. However, Educational Institutions does not spend a good
amount of time talking about the topic of money managing: paying taxes, mortgage, bills,
insurance, etc. It is time to extend financial knowledge by making personal finance a required
course at US colleges and universities.
With the essential instructions of communication and financial management provided to the
young adults, they will be more successful in their future life.
28. What does the underlined word “propound” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Bother. B. Charge. C. Provide. D. Treat.
29. What does the author advise schools to teach students
A. The communication ability. B. Skills of making money.
C. The history of their country. D. Ways to study maths and science.
30. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A. It is easy to survive in today’s financial environment.
B. Most of the students don’t need to build credit scores.
C. Students are lacking in instructions of financial management.
D. Educational Institutions spend much time on money managing.
31. What is the best title for the text

B. Why Should Life Skills Be Taught in School

A groundbreaking new study finds that coffee beans are bigger and more plentiful when birds
and bees team up to protect and pollinate coffee plants.
Without these winged helpers, some traveling thousands of miles, coffee farmers would see a
25% drop in crops, a loss of roughly $1,066 per acre of coffee. That’s important for the $26 billion
coffee industry—including consumers, farmers, and corporations who depend on nature’s unpaid
labor—but the research goes beyond that.
The study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is the first to show, using
real-world experiments at 30 coffee farms, that the contributions of nature—in this case, bee
pollination combined with pest control by birds—are larger than their individual contributions.
“Until now, researchers have typically calculated the benefits of nature separately, and then
simply added them up, which actually underestimates the benefits biodiversity provides to
agriculture and human well-being,” says lead expert Alejandra. “But nature is an interacting
system, full of important synergies (协同). We show the ecological and economic importance of
these interactions in one of the first experiments in actual farms.”
For the experiment, researchers dealt with coffee plants across 30 farms, excluding birds and
bees with a combination of large nets and small bags. They tested four key situations: bird activity
alone, bee activity alone, no bird or bee activity at all, and finally, a natural environment, where
bees and birds were free to pollinate and eat insects like the coffee berry borer, one of the most
damaging pests affecting coffee production worldwide. The combined positive effects of birds and
bees on fruit set, fruit weight and fruit uniformity—key factors in quality and price—were greater
than their individual effects, the study shows.
“Birds, bees, and millions of other species support our lives and livelihoods, but face threats
like habitat destruction and climate change,” says Alejandra. “One important reason we measure
these contributions is to help protect the many species that we depend on, and sometimes take for
granted.”
32. What does the new research focus on
A. Ways to increase coffee production.
B. Winged helpers’ effects on coffee plants.
C. Factors affecting coffee plants’ pollination.
D. The importance of pest control on coffee plants.
33. Which of the following is a major boost to the coffee industry
A. High-quality service. B. Government intervention.
C. Expanding investment. D. Maintaining biodiversity.
34. How did the researchers conduct the tests according to Paragraph 5
A. By introducing a concept. B. By making comparisons.
C. By explaining statistical data. D. By referring to a previous study.
35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Advertisement. B. Health. C. Science. D. Travel.

Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some
incidents. Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make
the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.
On a sunny morning last month, my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring
celebration at her farm. Since my family hadn’t done anything different for ages, the whole family
was very excited and everyone pulled his own weight to make sure everything goes as planned. In
order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Indi and my little brother Tex even
joined me to make an extra-special treat—cupcakes.
The picnic was intended to go from twelve to three. After double checking the car, my
parents loaded books, games, picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of food into the car. The
moment of our departure finally arrived as the clock struck 11. However, everything went wrong
the instant we bravely drove off. First, we had to stop and wait for Tex to find his shoes. Next, as
we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom forgot her wallet.
Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen’s house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for
Indi to use the bathroom. After that, my parents decided it’d be quicker to take this one little side
country road as a shortcut. But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! We drove forever on
a winding road with wildflower field spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green
pine trees going on and on within our sight. Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was
seized by a growing sense of desperation for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our
destination.

续写:
Just then, our car started making a strange noise. Obviously, there was something wrong with it and we had to pull over and call roadside service. Dad comforted us and claimed that help would arrive soon. But help did not arrive soon at all. So frustrated was I that I felt the whole world crumbled with tears streaming down my cheeks. Then came my dad’s voice. “Look on the bright side,” said dad. Our car couldn’t have picked a prettier place to break down. Mom agreed, getting out the picnic blanket and suggested walking over to that gorgeous wildflower field and have our own springtime celebration.
At first, we kids weren’t excited about the idea. We carried stuff over to the field, dragged ourselves down, and grumbled. But as we started looking around, cool things started happening. Hundreds of butterflies were dancing on the boundless wildflower field, looking like a beautiful scroll spreading out just for us. With a whooshing sound, a flock of birds rose up out of the pine trees, and flew around and around in the most amazing wavelike patterns, right over our heads! Just right there, we enjoyed our hand-made special treats, which were so delicious! It ended up one of the most amazing picnics in my life.

W: But do you mean the province of Quebec or Quebec City
M: I guess I mean the province. The wedding is in Montreal, so I’m going there first. Montreal is the capital of the province, right
W: People often think it is because it’s the biggest city in the province, but it’s not actually the capital. Quebec City is the capital. The St. Lawrence River runs right through the middle of the city. It’s beautiful in the winter. A lot of buildings have been nicely restored. Some of them were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. You’ll love it.
M: Great! I can’t wait to go!

M: Have you ever wished that you could exchange your parents for new ones who wouldn’t force you to go to school, tidy your bedroom, do your homework or eat your vegetables Well, it might be time to go to The Parent Agency to get your dream parents.
In this book, a nine-year-old boy called Barry goes to The Parent Agency with a list of 10 reasons why he doesn’t like his parents; things like being really strict. He is given a 5-Day Parent Trial Package with 5 different sets of new parents, who each have to give him a 10th birthday party,so that he can decide which parents he wants to live with in future. He spends the next 5 days with the different dream parents and has a party with each of them.
However, when he cannot decide which parents he likes best, the story gets very interesting… I enjoy this book because it is full of imagination and the pictures add to the humor in the book. I think this book will appeal to girls and boys. If your teacher read it aloud, it would make the whole class laugh. I’d like to say, it’s worthwhile to read for anyone aged 7-11.

C篇
CACB
Some may say that life skills are to be taught by their household rather than school, but that's not exactly true. Some students don't have a parent figure to teach them the necessary moral lessons needed...This is why courses of life skills should be set up in schools.(有些人可能会说,生活技能应由家庭而不是学校来传授,但这并不完全正确。 A.Bother打扰;B.Charge收费;C.Provide提供;D.Treat对待。
Over the course of history, students generally go to an educational institution of some sort to find themselves spending their entire time learning math and science, instead of what is required for real world-communication,which is through behaviors and manners.Manners are important when having a conversation with family, friends, teachers perhaps or even employers.Schools should find a way to teach manners as a way for students to have respect and be open-minded when it comes to other individuals.(纵观历史,学生通常会去某种教育机构把全部的时间用来学习数学和科学,而不是通过行为和举止进行真实世界所需要的交流。 With the essential instructions of communication and financial management provided to the young adults, they will be more successful in their future life.(通过向年轻人提供沟通和财务管理的基本指导,他们将在未来的生活中更加成功。)可知,作者强调在现实生活中沟通能力的重要性,看得出作者是在建议学校教学生沟通能力。故选A。
However,Educational Institutions does not spend a good amount of time talking about the topic of money managing :paying taxes, mortgage, bills, insurance, etc. It is time to extend financial knowledge by making personal finance a required course at US colleges and universities.(然而,教育机构并没有花大量时间谈论资金管理的话题:纳税、抵押、账单、保险等。
Young adults often have a lot to learn in school. However, occasionally, the life skills needed for them to become successful outside of school aren't learned. This may be why the years after high school can sometimes be the most uneasy and tense times for young adults.(年轻人在学校经常有很多东西要学。 With the essential instructions of communication and financial management provided to the young adults, they will be more successful in their future life.(通过向年轻人提供沟通和财务管理的基本指导,他们将在未来的生活中更加成功。)可知,生活基本技能主要包括沟通能力的培养和财务管理的基本指导两方面,以使学生获得更大的成功,因此B项(为什么要在学校教授生活技能?)可以作为文章的标题。故选B。

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Without these winged helpers, some traveling thousands of miles, coffee farmers would see a 25% drop in crops, a loss of roughly $1,066 per acre of coffee. That’s important for the $26 billion coffee industry — including consumers, farmers, and corporations who depend on nature’s unpaid labor — but the research goes beyond that. (如果没有这些带翅膀的帮手,有些需要长途跋涉数千英里,咖啡农的收成将下降25%,每英亩咖啡的损失约为1066美元。这对价值260亿美元的咖啡产业来说很重要——包括依赖大自然无偿劳动的消费者、农民和企业——但研究的范围不止于此)”可知,新研究关注的是长翅膀的帮手对咖啡树的影响。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““Until now, researchers have typically calculated the benefits of nature separately, and then simply added them up, which actually underestimates the benefits biodiversity provides to agriculture and human wellbeing,” says lead expert Alejandra. (“到目前为止,研究人员通常单独计算自然的好处,然后简单地把它们加起来,这实际上低估了生物多样性对农业和人类福祉的好处,”首席专家Alejandra说)”可知,维护生物多样性是对咖啡产业的重大推动。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“For the experiment, researchers dealt with coffee plants across 30 farms, excluding birds and bees with a combination of large nets and small bags. They tested four key situations: bird activity alone, bee activity alone, no bird or bee activity at all, and finally, a natural environment, where bees and birds were free to pollinate and eat insects like the coffee berry borer, one of the most damaging pests affecting coffee production worldwide. The combined positive effects of birds and bees on fruit set, fruit weight and fruit uniformity — key factors in quality and price — were greater than their individual effects, the study shows.
根据第一段“A groundbreaking new study finds that coffee beans are bigger and more plentiful when birds and bees team up to protect and pollinate (授粉) coffee plants. (一项突破性的新研究发现,当鸟类和蜜蜂合作保护咖啡树并为其授粉时,咖啡豆会更大、更丰富)”可知,这是一篇新研究。由此推知,文章也许选自报纸的科学版面。故选C。
