Have you ever read the famous book Little Johannes It’s said that a new Chinese version (版本) of the book came out in September, over 90 years after Lu Xun’s version.
Written by Frederik van Eeden, Little Johannes is a fairy (仙女) story. One night Johannes finds a 31 in the lake and gets in it. He falls asleep. Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children’s book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, Life magazine published a report on school children who could not read. The report said many children’s books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used rhyming words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Doctor Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old child should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.

Before you read this story, let’s take a look at a sentence in Chinese: “研表究明, 汉字序顺并不定一影阅响读。” Did you notice that some of the characters in this sentence are in the wrong order You might not realize it, but your brain can read and understand most sentences, even when the words are in the wrong order.
Do you know why that happens
When we’re first learning how to read, we read word by word. But after we become more experienced, we read in full phrases and even sentences. People can read five to six words at one time. Also, as experienced readers, we take the things we’re familiar(熟悉的) with for granted(把……当作理所当然). We don’t pay much attention to small details, such as the word order.
Therefore when we read the sentence at the beginning of this article, the content(内容) was familiar to us. So we read it in the way we think it should be, with all the words in the right order. This is like when we see a person with long hair—we usually think that the person is a girl without taking a closer look.

It is believed that humans remember the meanings of words mostly by their shape and layout, rather than the order or the letters. However, we cannot read scrambled(打乱的) sentences as quickly and efficiently as we read normal text.
