Can trees talk Yes --- but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree (柳树) attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them tasteless so that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. The even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapor--- a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make themselves taste also terrible, too.
Talking, of course, doesn’t need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. Long long ago, there was a beautiful place with thousands of trees. Around those trees was the home of many lions. Those lions killed other animals and ate them. The bodies of the animals always made the air bad, and many trees thought the place was not fit to live in any more.
One day, two trees were talking. The first tree said, “These lions are polluting our home. We have to save our home from them. Let’s drive them away.”
“Yes,” agreed the other tree.
An old tree was listening to them. He said, “They may be polluting the air. But they are keeping us safe. No people are brave enough to come into our home.”
But his words did not change the idea of the two trees. They finally did that. That evening, the two trees started shaking very hard. “We will make the lions afraid, so they will leave our home and never come back again,” the two trees said and laughed.
All the other trees joined them. “Don’t do that,” shouted the old tree. But the other trees did not listen. They made great noises. “Something horrible is happening. Let’s run away,” all the animals said.
The two trees were happy. “Huh! Now we can enjoy some fresh air,” they said. But they were only happy for a few days. One day a man came and started cutting down the trees. “Now I don’t need to be afraid of the lions,” he said to himself. Soon there were other people. “Now all of us will die,” said the old tree.“How stupid we are. We should listen to this old tree,” the other trees said sadly. It is not possible to tell the importance of forests in just a few words. Forests affect(影响) our daily lives in so many ways, even in the busy noisy city center.
Just think about your life today: Do you have your breakfast Read a newspaper Turn on a light Travel to work in a bus or car Do your homework Write on your notebook Clean your hands with a tissue
Forest products are used in our daily lives. All the activities above have something to do with forests. Some are easy to point out—fruits, paper and wood from trees, and so on. Others are less obvious(明显的)—they help make daily products like medicine. They not only help make our lives more convenient, but also make our Earth more beautiful and comfortable.
Forests help protect the sea, and the Earth is in good health because of them.
However, we are losing them. Over the past 50 years, about half the world’s forests have been lost. The most important reason for that is people’s activities like polluting the environment and cutting down trees.
